Veiros: Historic Buildings and Cultural Traces
Accommodation in Veiros
Veiros can be explored through its historic buildings: the castle, Torre do Relógio, churches from different periods, and a Renaissance work. Here, you will encounter different layers of history and themes. The keep of the castle points to the start of a construction project in 1308; the churches’ historical connections range from a church in the former area to a present-day building from the 18th century. These differences offer a specific focus for planning your trip.
Castelo de Veiros and Torre do Relógio
Construction of the keep of Castelo de Veiros began in 1308. The castle is thought to have had four gates; one of them was located where Torre do Relógio stands today. The tower once belonged to the portas do Sol. Thus, this building brings together two historical connections: its former association with the portas do Sol and the possible location of one of the presumed castle gates.
Castelo de Veiros stands above the Albufeira de Ana Loura. This elevated position adds a connection to the landscape to the building’s history. As you explore the site, you can consider not only the question of fortification but also the castle’s position above the Albufeira.
To access the castle, request a key at the Asilo de N.ª Sr.ª do Perpétuo Socorro on Tv. do Ferrompeu. Before your visit, check whether this arrangement is in effect. This is particularly relevant if visiting the castle is a fixed part of your plans.
Churches and Other Historic Buildings
Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Mileu is considered one of the oldest churches in the former area of Veiros. Outside, it has a churchyard with benches for pilgrims. This offers a point of interest in addition to the church building’s historical significance: the site described also includes an outdoor area and seating for pilgrims.
Today’s Igreja do Senhor dos Passos dates from a different period. The building is from the 18th century and may have replaced an original church from the 16th century. The statement about its predecessor is explicitly tentative. In contrast with Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Mileu, which stands out for its historical significance, here you can focus in particular on the succession of a present-day building and a possible older predecessor.
The cemetery associated with the Misericórdia church contains the mausoleum of Joaquim da Costa Zagalo. This named site adds a specific place of remembrance to the history of churches and buildings. The Pelourinho in front of the former Paços do Concelho building adds another architectural feature: it is a Renaissance work made of white marble from Estremoz. The church, cemetery and Renaissance work offer a range of themes to consider when choosing which places to visit.
