Those choosing Sertã as a travel destination can shape their stay around different features of the area: buildings dating back several centuries, riverbanks and a designated hiking route, or regional cuisine. The historical and scenic highlights offer different ways to plan your trip, depending on whether you want to focus on cultural history, outdoor activity or local food culture.

Architectural history from the Middle Ages to Art Deco

Sertã’s buildings span several centuries of history. The Capela de São João Baptista is believed to have been built in the 13th century, on the initiative of the Hospitaller Order, within the castle grounds. The Igreja Matriz de São Pedro was rebuilt at the beginning of the 15th century. It has three naves and two side altars with gilded wooden altarpieces. Other features described inside include polychrome azulejo panels, the choir stalls of the collegiate church, and paintings of the martyrdom of Saint Peter and Saint Peter as patriarch.

The Ponte Filipina, also called Ponte da Carvalha, is another historic structure: it was built during the Philippine dynasty at the beginning of the 17th century. The Capela de São Sebastião dates from the 18th century and is located beside the Alameda da Carvalha.

The Paços do Concelho da Sertã illustrate more recent architectural history. The town hall was built in 1934 in the Art Deco style, to a design by architect Cassiano Branco. The Pelourinho da Sertã is a neo-stylistic monument, rebuilt in 1937 using elements of the Manueline pillory erected around 1521. The dates make tangible the difference between the earlier origins of some of the components and the monument’s later form.

Riverside areas, bathing spots and the PR7 Rota da Celinda

The Alameda da Carvalha is a riverside area on the right bank of the Ribeira Grande, also known as the Ribeira da Sertã, in Vila de Sertã. Praia Fluvial da Ribeira Grande is in the heart of the town, beside the municipal swimming pool and an extensive picnic park. Piscina Municipal da Sertã is on Rua da Piscina, also beside the river beach, and offers water sports activities. The swimming pool is a seasonal facility; check current operating conditions before your visit.

Another way to experience the landscape is the linear PR7 Rota da Celinda hiking route. It runs through the areas of the parishes of Sertã and Troviscal, along the riverside landscape of the Ribeira da Sertã and through typical rural scenery. Covering 21.5 kilometres, it runs from Praia Fluvial do Troviscal to Sertã’s riverside recreational area. The route is rated moderate. Its length and rating provide concrete points to help you plan; check route conditions before setting out.

The options therefore offer different points of focus: riverside spots and buildings in Vila on the one hand, and a longer linear hike through river and rural landscapes on the other. Taking both into account can help you plan your days around the amount of local history and outdoor activity you want, without treating the hiking route as a visit to individual attractions.

Regional cuisine and festivities

Maranho is a centuries-old culinary speciality of the municipality of Sertã and has carried the geographical indication label since 2022. You can try it at restaurants in the municipality; the specific offering may vary. If you specifically want to try Maranho, check with a restaurant in advance.

The São João celebrations on 24 June and São Pedro celebrations on 29 June include bonfires in the streets of Vila de Sertã. If these dates are important to your trip, check the programme for your stay. Architectural history, riverside scenery, the hiking trail and cuisine each offer a different focus and provide various points of reference for considering Sertã as a travel destination.
