Proença-a-Nova is surrounded by extensive forests and cultivated fields. These include olive groves and cherry trees, whose blossoms mark the arrival of spring. Hiking trails, river landscapes and historic places offer different ways to shape your trip: you can combine views over a valley with a stroll through old streets, or take time to explore the region’s everyday history.

Hiking Trails and Views

The first stage of the Rota da Cortiçada passes through the oldest streets of Proença-a-Nova and reaches the Cruzeiro at an elevation of 607 metres. From there, panoramic views extend over the town and surrounding villages. If you’re planning a longer hike, the PR1 PNV “História na Paisagem” is an easy, 9-kilometre trail. It starts at the Igreja das Moitas and takes an estimated three and a half hours. The easy TP2 Fróia is much shorter at 4.6 kilometres and about an hour; it starts at Praia Fluvial de Fróia. This makes it easy to choose between the two routes based on distance and estimated time. Check the route information again before setting off.

The PR8 PNV – Caminho do Xisto de Figueira – Por Muros de Xisto is another option for a circular route: it is easy and about 6.3 kilometres long. The trail follows the Ribeira de Figueira to an old olive press and a bridge. The area’s trails also lead to archaeological traces: Pedra das Letras is a rock with drawings inscribed on it. Anta do Vale do Alvito is one of the three burial mounds on the PR1 PNV. This trail therefore brings together the hiking route and named archaeological sites.

Rivers, Nature and Viewpoints

At Miradouro do Almourão near Sobral Fernando, you can look out over the valley of the Rio Ocreza and the Portas de Almourão. Visible landscape features include river terraces, formed as the river gradually cut deeper into its bed. For a different nature experience, follow the trail at Praia da Aldeia Ruiva along the Ribeira da Isna through lush vegetation. You may sometimes spot kites, eagles and black storks there.

At Praia Fluvial da Fróia, clear water, restored mills and large sunbathing areas are joined by a children’s area. Praia Fluvial do Malhadal offers kayak and pedal boat rentals, as well as a floating pool with a children’s area. Check which of these facilities are available at the time of your visit. Praia Fluvial da Cerejeira has good conditions for sport fishing, and its natural surroundings are considered rich in fauna and flora.

Villages, Crafts and Cultural Heritage

In Proença-a-Nova, the Igreja Matriz features 18th-century gilded woodcarving. A traditional shale mill is known for its very large millstones. Near São Pedro do Esteval, a Roman bridge crosses the Ribeira da Pracana. These structures offer contrasting points of interest: one centres on the elaborate woodwork inside a church, while the others showcase millstones or a bridge over the river.

The Museu Isilda Martins is divided into seven sections. They cover agriculture, forestry, domestic spaces and traditional crafts. Exhibits include everyday objects, clothing, farming equipment and other household items from the first half of the 20th century. In Figueira, the communal oven is also used weekly to bake bread and broa; the baked goods are then taken to the village shop.

An Interactive Look at the Forest

At the Centro Ciência Viva da Floresta, the interactive science experience focuses on the forest. The “Aromas da Floresta” module invites visitors to smell forest aromas and guess where they come from. Booking is recommended; without an advance reservation, access may be limited depending on available capacity. Listed opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 to 18:00, with a lunchtime closure on weekends and public holidays. As opening hours may change, check them before your visit.
