In Meimoa, hiking, connections to the water and traces of culture can be considered as different focuses for planning your trip. The Rota Patada da Mula includes a detour to a rock engraving; other trails take in the reservoir and its banks. In the village, the Capela de São Domingos and an old olive-oil mill are cultural points of interest. The different themes and the specific details on the length and difficulty of the GR 22 can help you make your choice.

Hiking with Different Focuses

On the Rota Patada da Mula, a detour leads to a rock engraving of podomorphs, known as Patada da Mula. The final section of the route runs along the reservoir shore. This means the trail combines an archaeological site with a stretch along the water. Patada da Mula is listed as archaeological cultural heritage and is also currently undergoing the classification process.

The Percurso do Sobreiral has a different focus: the reservoir’s water makes it a suitable trail for birdwatching. It starts at the imposing dam structure of the Barragem da Meimoa on the reservoir’s left bank. If you are choosing between the two routes, they offer different themes: the Rota Patada da Mula features the rock engraving and the later stretch along the shore, while the Percurso do Sobreiral focuses on birdwatching and starts at the dam.

The GR 22 Penamacor–Meimoa is a 16.4-kilometre Grande Rota hiking trail of moderate difficulty. Its length and difficulty give you two specific criteria for planning. The other trails mentioned here can be distinguished by their respective themes: a detour to the engraving, a route along the reservoir shore or suitability for birdwatching.

Leisure by the River and Reservoir

The Zona de Lazer da Meimoa is located by the Ribeira da Meimoa and the Romano-Philippine bridge. It has beach soccer pitches; facilities at the leisure area may vary seasonally. The pitches add a different outdoor activity to the hiking options. The connection with water is different here from that of the trails: the leisure area is by the Ribeira and the bridge, while the described route of the Rota Patada da Mula and the starting point of the Percurso do Sobreiral take in the reservoir.

A Village Walk and Cultural Traces

A walk through the village is recommended to discover the Capela de São Domingos. This gives your trip planning a cultural focus of its own alongside the hiking trails. The chapel can be considered a destination for a village walk, while the routes each have their own connections to the rock engraving, the reservoir shore or birdwatching.

An old olive-oil mill preserves an example of the olive oil production method. The building also houses an ethnographic and archaeological collection. The history of production and the collection offer another way to explore local history, alongside the chapel and the archaeological cultural heritage of Patada da Mula.

The Casa do Comendador is another historical point of interest: it is thought to have been built between the late 15th century and the early years of the 16th century. The dating remains a period and does not specify an exact year of construction. Together with the other cultural themes, this lets you distinguish between archaeological heritage, village history and the history of olive oil production when planning your trip.
