Covilhã combines a distinctive textile history with museums, city views and routes towards Serra da Estrela. When planning a stay, visitors can choose from a range of focuses: the development of wool processing, sacred art and urban history, or routes with named starting and ending points. Each of the sights and trails offers its own way to explore the city and its surroundings.

Wool Heritage and Museums

The Real Fábrica de Panos was founded in Covilhã on 26 June 1764 by D. José I. The Museu de Lanifícios presents the technological development of wool processing and the wool industry through machinery, equipment, tools, documents, raw materials and textile products. The industry was established primarily in Covilhã and the surrounding region. Equipment and products are presented alongside written records, with the development of wool processing at the heart of the display.

During renovation work on the building in 1975, archaeological remains of the dye works of the Real Fábrica de Panos were uncovered. Subsequently, Decree No. 28/82 of 26 February classified these remains as an Imóvel de Interesse Público. The site thus links the history of the wool industry with a specific archaeological discovery and its later classification.

The museum buildings also offer different points of interest for exploring the city. The Museu da Covilhã is housed in a historic building designed by Ernesto Korrodi. The Museu de Arte Sacra is located in Casa Maria José Alçada, also designed by a renowned Portuguese architect: Raul Lino. Its collection comprises more than 600 works of sacred art dating from the 12th to the 20th century.

The Museu Mineiro in Barroca Grande, in the parish of Aldeia de São Francisco de Assis, offers another perspective. It was built in a former fuel depot. In Covilhã, New Hand Lab fosters creative work, experimentation and innovation in textiles, design, media art and heritage. Visits are possible on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays by prior reservation, subject to availability and the arrangement of a time.

Routes in the City and Serra da Estrela

The PR12 CVL – Rota da Floresta is a circular route starting in Covilhã. It takes in the valleys of Ribeira da Carpinteira and Ribeira da Goldra, also known as Ribeira dos Pisões, as well as the area of the city’s Mata Nacional. The PR11 CVL – Porta da Estrela has a different focus: it connects the city with the central massif of Serra da Estrela and ends near the Centro de Limpeza de Neve in Piornos.

The Caminho de Santiago in the municipality of Covilhã also offers clear waypoints for planning: it runs for approximately 13 kilometres between Ferro (Pedra do Adufe) and Peraboa (Capela do Divino Espírito Santo). The PR13 CVL – Rota do Granito starts and ends in Penhas da Saúde. These descriptions distinguish the routes by their stated connections, approximate length or endpoints, without combining them into a single route.

In Cortes do Meio, the bathing area is open to bathers, mountain bikers and hikers; swimming is seasonal. On a regional scale, the most popular road crossings of Serra da Estrela connect Covilhã and Seia with mountain villages and attractions such as Penhas da Saúde and the Torre. The Torre is accessible by paved road and lies within the municipalities of Manteigas, Seia and Covilhã.

Cityscape and Getting There

The pedestrian bridge over Ribeira da Carpinteira stands out for its dimensions: it is 52 metres high and approximately 220 metres long. From Miradouro das Portas do Sol, visitors can see the landscape once controlled from the castle, including the main entrances to the city and the outline of the historic border with the Kingdom of Castile.

Transport hubs also provide practical points of reference for getting there. Covilhã railway station is in the city centre and is a hub for passengers on the Linha da Beira Baixa. Covilhã’s Central de Camionagem is served by national and international express services.
