Almaceda: River Beach, Trails and Olive Oil Tradition
Accommodation in Almaceda
Almaceda is shaped by the Ribeira de Almaceda, its river beach and trails along the riverbank. The river runs through the village and forms the Praia Fluvial de Almaceda. Other highlights include a restored olive oil mill, traditional craft techniques and an annual festival. The routes include a mountain bike circuit and a walk for which the distance and estimated duration are provided.
River Beach and Location
The Praia Fluvial de Almaceda is also known as Poço do Lagar. It separates the locality of Espírito Santo on the right bank from the locality of Senhora da Graça on the left bank; unique natural landscapes can be seen from there. The river beach lies on the Ribeira, which flows through Almaceda. The location of the two localities on opposite banks helps put the riverside setting into context: here, the Ribeira, beach and riverside localities are closely connected.
Trails along the Ribeira
An easy mountain bike circuit starts and ends in Almaceda. It follows the Ribeira de Almaceda towards Rochas de Baixo and then returns to the starting point. The PR2 Caminho do Xisto de Martim Branco runs along the Ribeira’s banks, passing small gardens, olive groves and traditional schist houses. It continues to Almaceda, where the riverside garden and river beach invite you to take a break. The circuit focuses on the route and return, while the PR2 highlights the riverside path, its landscape features and the place where it ends.
Hiking or mountain biking?
The PR7 Rota dos Lagares is listed as a 15-kilometre hike, rated easy, with an estimated duration of four hours and 15 minutes. It starts at the Junta de Freguesia de Almaceda. This allows you to factor the distance and estimated time into your day’s plans; the duration is an estimate. Both the PR7 and the mountain bike circuit are rated easy, but they differ in the type of activity: the PR7 is a walking trail with stated distance and time, while the other is a circuit that starts and ends in Almaceda. You can choose based on the activity and the planning information you need.
Discover the Olive Oil Tradition
Not every exploration involves following a trail. The Lagar de Rochas de Cima was recently restored and can be visited to learn about the traditional olive oil production process. In Beira Baixa, this was the most widespread method before more modern and industrialised processes emerged. A visit therefore connects a specific place with the regional history of olive oil production. For trip planning, it offers a distinct cultural focus alongside the river and routes: the mill, its production method and its former place in the region take centre stage.
Festival Dates and Craft Traditions
The annual festival in honour of the Divino Espírito Santo and Nossa Senhora da Graça takes place from 3 to 6 June. Check the current dates and programme for your travel year. At the 2022 festival, the afternoon included a traditional procession through the village by the Grupo de Bombos de Almaceda. Almaceda’s traditional crafts also include embroidered weaving and rag rugs. The festival marks a date in June, while the textile work adds local craft traditions to the cultural picture.
