Discover Vimioso through its river landscapes, historic buildings and nature interpretation facilities. When planning your trip, it is worth considering the different themes of the routes: along the Rio Angueira, riverside vegetation and medieval crossings shape the trails; along the Rio Sabor, the cultural landscape and cultivated areas take centre stage.

River routes with distinct characters

The PR1 Pelas Margens do Rio Angueira runs along the river between S. Joanico, Serapicos and Angueira. The route includes a medieval bridge, watermills and stone slab walkways; it also passes through lush riverside woodland and dense forests of oak and strawberry trees.

The PR4 Trilho do Castelo de Algoso has a different focus. It includes a detour through the Natura 2000 site Sítio de Importância Comunitária dos Rios Sabor e Maçãs, along the Rio Angueira, which has been preserved in a wild state. Another section follows a medieval paved road to the medieval bridge of Algoso.

The PR2 Pelas Ladeiras do Rio Sabor passes through olive groves, native scrubland, farmland, grain fields and vineyards in the Rio Sabor valley. When choosing between the landscapes, the wooded banks and bridges of the Angueira contrast with the fields, vineyards and groves of the Sabor valley.

Nature and regional themes

The Parque Ibérico de Natureza e Aventura de Vimioso (PINTA) serves as a reception, information and visitor management centre for the entire Natura 2000 site Rios Sabor e Maçãs. Its permanent exhibition covers the slopes of the Rio Sabor, wet meadows, forests, rivers, cultivated areas and villages. Natural environments and landscapes shaped by human activity are presented together.

The PINTA area includes the Escola do Lobo Ibérico, an educational and information facility about the importance and behaviour of the Iberian wolf and the historical relationship between people and wolves. The CALP do Burro de Miranda is integrated into PINTA and offers visits to its stables and walks accompanied by Burros de Miranda. Activities at PINTA require advance booking.

In Serapicos, the Estação da Biodiversidade is a short educational trail with nine information panels. It focuses on observing biodiversity, particularly butterflies and dragonflies.

The mineral water of the Termas de Vimioso is another subject in its own right: the 2024 municipal regulation lists respiratory diseases, as well as rheumatic and musculoskeletal conditions, as recognised therapeutic indications. The regulation refers to a decree published in 2015.

Local history and cultural heritage

Finds at Cabeço da Atalaia above Vimioso provide evidence of prehistoric settlement in this region. The Igreja Matriz de Vimioso, also known as Igreja de São Vicente, is a Mannerist church dedicated to Saint Vincent and classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público.

Vimioso received its first Carta de Foral in the 16th century. The Pelourinho was probably erected after the Carta de Foral was granted and the Concelho was established by King D. Manuel I in 1516. Castelo de Algoso is considered one of the most important medieval fortresses in eastern Trás-os-Montes.

The Museu Etnográfico da Casa da Cultura de Vimioso was recognised by the Comissão de Coordenação e Desenvolvimento Regional do Norte as a Museu de Território da Região Norte. The Centro de Interpretação dos Pombais Tradicionais offers a different perspective on rural architecture: it explains the forms, uses and construction techniques of traditional dovecotes. A signposted route leads from the centre through Uva, where more than 40 traditional dovecotes can be seen.

The Rota dos Mineiros de Argozelo passes the preserved Galeria do Gato and the Parque Mineiro. With its extensive collection of equipment, the Parque Mineiro is considered an open-air museum of industrial archaeology.
