When planning your trip, Sendim da Serra’s attractions and named hiking trails can be considered according to different interests. Religious buildings and the medieval necropolis offer points of cultural and historical interest; the two trails differ in their routes and destinations. You can first decide whether architecture, religious imagery, archaeological evidence or a hiking route will weigh most heavily in your choice.

Architecture in the older part of town

The Igreja Matriz de Sendim da Serra is a Baroque church. Its façade is plain and austere, with a bell tower at its centre. The old part of the parish is grouped around the church, which also serves as a reference point for the layout of this area. Inside the church are six Baroque oil paintings on canvas. They are attributed to Bento Coelho da Silveira and dated to the period from 1617 to 1708. The building can therefore be considered both for its clear exterior design and for the paintings, with their attribution and dating. Architecture and painting offer two distinct art-historical points of interest.

Capela de Santa Eufémia and the necropolis

The Capela de Santa Eufémia is a small, rectangular chapel. Benches stand in its covered porch. Nearby is a medieval necropolis with rectangular graves carved into a schist outcrop. Together, the chapel and necropolis form an area of historical and archaeological interest that the Município de Alfândega da Fé has recognized as protected. To understand the area, it is therefore important to consider both the chapel’s architectural form and the location, shape and material of the graves. The chapel is an architectural point of interest, while the necropolis is an archaeological one; both are part of the same protected area.

Sanctuary, frescoes and views

The Santuário de Nossa Senhora de Jerusalém combines religious frescoes with a viewing balcony. It is a Neoclassical sanctuary dating from 1901. Inside are restored 17th-century frescoes: one depicts the meeting of Joachim and Anne at the Golden Gate, while another shows the crucifixion of Christ with Nossa Senhora and São João Evangelista. The two subjects range from the meeting to the crucifixion, giving the frescoes specific, identifiable religious content. A viewing balcony has been built around the Santuário. From there, visitors can look out over valleys with pine forests, olive groves and cultivated farmland. The view thus takes in both wooded and agricultural landscapes.

Two hiking trails, different points of interest

The Trilho da Gouveia runs partly through the areas of the parishes of Gouveia, Sendim da Serra and Cabreira. The Trilho das Capelas leads to the Capela de Santa Eufémia. The trails thus differ in their described routes: one passes partly through the areas of three parishes, while the other leads to a specifically named chapel. When planning your trip, you can consider whether the route through several parishes or the destination at the Capela de Santa Eufémia matters more to you. This distinction offers a practical starting point for choosing, without presenting the two trails as a single circuit.
