A town between the Ribeira and the Barranco

Vale de Vargo lies on the banks of the Ribeira do Enxoé, a tributary of the Rio Guadiana. A barranco runs through the town, dividing it into two areas: Vale de Vargo de Cima and Vale de Vargo de Baixo. The two names refer to this division; the barranco is therefore also a clear landmark that helps define the layout of the town.

Religious traditions throughout the year

The Festa de SĂŁo SebastiĂŁo is a recurring religious tradition in Vale de Vargo. It takes place on the weekend closest to 20 January. The Festa da AscensĂŁo do Senhor is also held regularly: it is usually celebrated in May, on the weekend after Ascension Day. The dates are determined differently: one is tied to 20 January, the other to Ascension Day. If you are planning your trip around one of the festivals, check the date for the relevant year.

There is also a seasonal Christmas custom: a nativity scene is set up outdoors beside the church in Vale de Vargo. Along with the two religious festivals in January and May, this tradition offers a glimpse into the town’s yearly cycle.

Religious and architectural traces

A stone in the parish church of São Sebastião was identified through research as a piece bearing features of Visigothic art. Another architectural trace can be found behind the Casa do Povo: a 14th-century façade has been preserved there, belonging to what is thought to have been a medieval manor house. The art-historical classification of the stone and the cautious attribution of the façade represent two distinct aspects of the local cultural heritage.

Near Vale de Vargo, the Igreja de SĂŁo Francisco / Convento de Santo AntĂłnio is located on the road to Vale de Vargo. The building was founded in 1463 and rebuilt in 1502. The dates mark two different construction phases: the foundation and the later reconstruction. This places the nearby site in its historical sequence without conflating it with the architectural evidence in the town itself.

Agriculture and olive oil

Some of the main agricultural activities in Vale de Vargo are olive growing, vineyards and grain cultivation. The Feira do Azeite places a particular emphasis on olive oil: it takes place annually in mid-March and promotes and preserves the oil as one of the outstanding products of the Freguesia and the Concelho de Serpa. The event therefore focuses on one product, while the town’s agricultural profile encompasses several activities.

A walk at Cerro da Mina da Oca was also held as part of the XIV Feira do Azeite. This connects the olive oil fair with a specific event in the surrounding area. If you are planning to travel for a festival or the fair, check the date for the relevant year in advance.
