Vila Nova De Milfontes lies at the mouth of the Mira, where fresh water meets the Atlantic. Beaches, dunes and cliffs shape the landscape. There are also water-based activities, a stage of the Fishermen's Trail and historic buildings.

Water, Beaches and River

The waters at Praia da Franquia are calm and suitable for children. Windsurfing and canoeing are also possible there. Small boats are also available for hire at Praia da Franquia; this service may vary by season. At low tide, pools form at Praia do Farol. If you want to experience this tidal feature, plan your beach visit for low tide. Because of its location near the river mouth, Praia do Farol requires particular caution regarding possible currents. Follow the warnings and notices posted there. While Praia da Franquia combines calm waters with water sports, the tidal pools and notices about possible currents are key considerations for a visit to Farol. A boat trip on the Mira is recommended as a visitor activity. Operators and schedules may change; check current departure times before setting out.

Coastal Hiking

There is also a clearly stated distance for walkers: the Fishermen's Trail stage from Vila Nova De Milfontes to Almograve is 16.6 km long and considered short and accessible. This distance provides a concrete guide for planning a hike and distinguishes this option from a boat trip or a beach visit. As route conditions can change, check them before setting out.

Local History and Buildings

Vila Nova De Milfontes was founded in 1486 by a royal decree of King João II. The Forte de São Clemente was built between 1599 and 1602 to protect the town and shipping. For several centuries, the river and seaport of Vila Nova De Milfontes served as an outer port for Odemira. The Ermida de São Sebastião is a vernacular Mannerist chapel now incorporated into the town. It dates from the mid-16th century and probably stands over an older military structure. The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Graça dates from the early 16th century. Its façade and chancel arch were relatively little affected by the 1959 modernisation. The annual river procession on 15 August starts at the Igreja Matriz. On 7 April 1924, pilots set off eastward from Campo dos Coitos near Milfontes. In chronological terms, the town's history runs from its foundation in the late 15th century through the religious buildings of the 16th century to the construction of the fort around 1600.
