Cuba: Churches, Museums and Culture
Accommodation in Cuba
In Cuba, you can encounter different ways of exploring history and culture: sacred architecture, collections, literature, handicrafts and Cante Alentejano. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, these themes can give your trip a particular focus. The sights do not all tell the same story: some lead you through architecture and art, while others offer a glimpse into personal collections or cultural forms of expression.
Churches and architectural history
The Igreja e Recolhimento do Carmo dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. Inside, there is an 18th-century fresco depicting Saint Christopher with the Christ Child on his shoulders. The building’s history and the image offer two different points of reference for exploring this place: the period when the building was constructed and the religious scene depicted.
The Igreja de S. Pedro was built between 1569 and 1585 and is considered one of Cuba’s small pilgrimage chapels. Another church, the Igreja N. Sr.ª da Conceição da Rocha, is also known as the Ermida de São Brás. It dates from the 16th and 17th centuries and has a Manueline portal.
Collections, literature and Christopher Columbus
The Tesouro da Igreja Matriz de S. Vicente de Cuba includes collections of archaeology, painting, sculpture, goldsmithing, textiles and decorative arts. The different areas make a visit an encounter with several fields of art and knowledge. A guide is available to provide explanations, and guided tours are also offered. Arrange the details of your visit in advance.
In the center of Cuba is the Casa Fialho de Almeida, a literary museum dedicated to the life and work of Fialho de Almeida. Because of its heritage value associated with him, the Casa is classified as a Monument of Public Interest. As visitor arrangements may change, check the current conditions before your visit.
The Centro Cristóvão Colon presents the Portuguese identity of Christopher Columbus and his connections to Cuba do Alentejo through words and images. Guided tours are also offered here; confirm the arrangements in advance. At the Museu António Bicho, also called Museu Caluta, visitors can see António Bicho’s private collection of handicrafts. Check in advance to confirm current access arrangements.
Cante Alentejano and events
In the Concelho de Cuba, Cante Alentejano is described as one of the most significant cultural forms of expression; Cuba is known as the “Catedral do Cante.” The Feira Anual de Cuba is a recurring event featuring music, handicrafts, gastronomy, Cante Alentejano, amusement attractions and themed exhibitions. Dates and individual program items vary with each edition. So, check the program for your travel dates if you would like to include the event in your plans.
Handicrafts and regional snacks
A visit to Mário Grilo in Cuba is among the described handicraft experiences: a footprint is taken to make Alentejo boots. As the provider’s availability may vary, check in advance whether a visit is possible. The Rota das Tabernas passes through old, traditional taverns and includes regional snacks. If you plan to take this route, ask in advance which stops are available; this will help you distinguish the culinary experience from the handicraft one.
Traces in the townscape
The Chafariz da Fonte dos Leões is located near the route of the former Roman road that linked Évora and Beja. The Fonte dos Leões was built in 1923. At the same time, public washing places were established near the Rossio da Bica, also known as Largo da Bica.
