Almodôvar combines medieval city history with museums, religious architecture and other local cultural topics. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, the purpose of your trip can help you choose what to focus on: are you especially interested in architectural history, museum exhibits, sports facilities or an event in July? These topics can be found in different places and institutions around Almodôvar.

City History and Getting Around

Almodôvar is a medieval town that was under the jurisdiction of the Order of Santiago and includes a former fortified Islamic settlement. For visitors arriving by bus, it is recommended to begin the town walk at the Centro Comercial e de Transportes. The tourist office is located in the Convento de Nossa Senhora da Conceição; the Fórum Cultural de Almodôvar is also housed in this historic convent in the town’s historic centre. As a civil monument, the Torre do Relógio has an exterior staircase; it was probably built in the 17th century. The information points to different periods: the medieval town and the former fortified settlement on the one hand, and the tower, probably built in the 17th century, on the other.

Buildings and Museums

The Igreja da Misericórdia combines Mannerist, Baroque and Neoclassical elements of religious architecture. Unlike the Torre do Relógio, whose civil architectural form and exterior staircase are the focus, here the emphasis is on the combination of different church styles. These three stylistic terms therefore provide a different architectural point of reference from the description of the tower.

The Museu Severo Portela is dedicated to the painter Severo Portela. It is housed in a building that formerly served as the town hall and was later converted into a prison. The Museu da Escrita do Sudoeste offers a different cultural focus: it presents the development of writing and written knowledge, as well as the forms of communication used by the peoples who inhabited this area more than 2,500 years ago. The dedication to a painter and the history of writing and communication thus represent different themes within Almodôvar’s museums.

The Igreja Matriz de Santo Ildefonso preserves liturgical objects, some of which come from the former Convento de Nossa Senhora da Conceição. The shoemaking trade also features in two different places: the Sala da Memória at the Museu Severo Portela houses an exhibition about it, and the Escultura do Sapateiro commemorates traditional shoemaking as part of the town’s identity. You can therefore encounter the same theme both as a museum exhibition and as a public memorial.

Sports and Cultural Events

The municipal description of the Almodôvar sports complex at the entrance to the town lists indoor and outdoor pools, a Turkish bath, tennis courts and football pitches.

FACAL is an arts and cultural fair held in July; the specific dates vary with each edition. Visitors can view and buy handicrafts there, as well as sample local and regional products. If you would like to plan your stay around the fair, check the dates for the relevant edition before arranging your trip. This time-specific event differs from the buildings, collections and facilities described as permanent.
