Aljustrel brings together sacred art, mining history and landscapes. Its churches feature decorative tiles and paintings, while the Parque Mineiro and Museu Municipal explore different aspects of mining and archaeology. There are also viewpoints and the PR2 AJT – Aljustrel tem uma mina trail, whose surfaces include urban paths, wooden boardwalks and rural tracks. If you are looking for a hotel in Aljustrel, this range of themes offers several ways to plan your stay.

Views over Aljustrel and the surrounding area

From the Igreja de Nossa Sr.ª do Castelo, you can look out over Aljustrel and the surrounding fields. The church combines this sweeping landscape view with a distinctive art-historical feature: inside are 17th-century tiles arranged in a carpet pattern. The chapel and the surrounding castle grounds of the Igreja de Nossa Sr.ª do Castelo are also part of the town’s history; since 1992, they have been classified as an immovable property of public interest.

South of the town centre, the Moinho do Maralhas windmill stands on a rise. It was recently restored and is in good condition. Its elevated setting and the view from the Igreja de Nossa Sr.ª do Castelo offer two distinct perspectives on the landscape in and around Aljustrel.

Church art and historical heritage

The main altar of the Igreja Matriz de Aljustrel – Santíssimo Salvador features a polychrome tile panel from the 17th century. The earliest documents mentioning the church date from 1478. Tiles also feature in the Igreja de Nossa Sr.ª do Castelo, though arranged in a carpet pattern and likewise dating from the 17th century. Together, the two churches offer distinct examples of sacred tile art.

Another artistic feature can be found in the main chapel of the Igreja da Misericórdia – Nossa Senhora das Dores, which contains paintings by the Mannerist school. Alongside Aljustrel’s other churches, these paintings highlight different forms of religious art, from tilework to paintings. This provides a useful counterpoint to the town’s industrial and archaeological history without conflating the themes.

Mining history and archaeology

The Parque Mineiro de Aljustrel is presented as an industrial tourism attraction focused on mining, geology, archaeology, education and culture. One specific example of industrial archaeology is the Núcleo Central de Compressores – Algares, a centre for industrial archaeology at the Algares mine. The Museu Municipal de Aljustrel complements this perspective with archaeological materials from excavations in the region.

The museum’s collection also includes mineral and rock samples. Most were collected from the mines of Aljustrel, Neves-Corvo and São Domingos. Two different approaches to the past therefore come together here: archaeological finds from the region and rock and mineral samples from the mining areas mentioned above. The Posto de Turismo – Aljustrel is located in the Parque Mineiro de Aljustrel, in Bairro de Santa Bárbara.

Trail surfaces and archaeological landscape

Along the PR2 AJT – Aljustrel tem uma mina trail, the surfaces alternate between urban paths, wooden boardwalks and rural tracks. This gives a concrete sense of the variety of surfaces along the route, without implying a walking time or a particular level of difficulty.

Cerro da Mangancha lies on a hilltop in the area of the present-day municipality of Aljustrel. The site is a fortified settlement whose earliest phase of development dates to the Late Bronze Age. From the hilltop, views extend across the surrounding landscape to the São João do Deserto mines. Here, archaeological history and sweeping views sit side by side within the municipality of Aljustrel.
