Urzelina offers travellers several clearly distinct themes: the lava from 1808 tells the story of how the landscape was formed, while historic buildings point to the church, religious practices and harbour defences. There are also diving and snorkelling activities, as well as a cycling route. If you are looking for hotels in Urzelina, these highlights can help you choose a location that suits your interests. The volcanic landscape, cultural heritage and water-based activities offer different ways to experience the area.

Volcanic Landscape and the 1808 Eruption

The Mistério da Urzelina consists of basaltic lava flows formed during the historic volcanic eruption of 1808. They originated at Bocas de Fogo, also known as Caldeirinhas, a group of craters on the island’s central volcanic ridge. From there, the lava flows moved south down the slopes and reached the sea at Urzelina. The historic date of the eruption and the traceable course of the lava are thus brought together in one place.

The Mistério is a geosite of the Azores Geopark, recognised as being of national importance and of scientific, educational, cultural and geotourism interest. This designation distinguishes the landscape feature from the built heritage sites: at the Mistério, the focus is on the origin and course of the lava.

Buildings and Local History

The Torre da igreja da Urzelina is the surviving remnant of the former church of Urzelina, which was buried during the volcanic eruption of 1808. In Urzelina, the eruption is therefore encountered both as a geological event and in the history of a religious building.

The Forte da Urzelina, also known as “Castelinho”, was built to protect the mole of Urzelina from attacks by pirates and privateers. While the tower recalls the buried church, the fort points to the defence of the mole.

The Império do Divino Espírito Santo de São Mateus is used to display the crown, flag and staffs of the Cult of the Holy Spirit. The Rural Exhibition Centre of Urzelina is housed in former orange warehouses. Fruit was stored there before being exported through the port of Urzelina. This former use adds an economic aspect of the area to its religious and military architectural history.

Festivals and Traditions

At the traditional festivals in Urzelina honouring the Holy Spirit and the Holy Trinity, sweet bread, cheese and wine are distributed to the entire population. The festival tradition combines religious devotion with the community-wide distribution of food and drink. This is a tangible cultural point of reference if, alongside the landscape, you are also interested in the area’s religious life.

If you would like to plan your trip around one of these festivals, check the dates before making arrangements. The festivals offer a different way to experience Urzelina than its permanent geological and architectural landmarks.

Diving, Snorkelling and Swimming

Portinhos da Urzelina offers beginner diving, night diving and snorkelling in a very sheltered area with few currents. The options therefore range from different types of diving to snorkelling. A wide grotto lies at a depth of eight metres; natural light enters through an opening in the ceiling.

The dive site is directly accessible from the coast via the Urzelina tidal pools. The area is very sheltered and has few currents, but sea conditions can still vary. Check local conditions before entering the water.

Porto da Urzelina is a bathing area that developed from former harbour facilities. When choosing a water-based activity, it helps to distinguish between the two: Portinhos da Urzelina offers diving and snorkelling, while Porto da Urzelina is used as a bathing area.

A Cycling Route as Another Option

The Trilho Ecológico da Urzelina includes a three-kilometre cycling route; its inauguration was reported in March 2023. Cycling thus adds a specific route to the themes of volcanic landscape, architectural history and water-based activities. The distance gives you a clear point of reference when including cycling in your travel plans.
