The lava delta and the Fajã de Lopo Vaz circular hike put nature in the spotlight; the church, lighthouse and historic buildings offer further themes to consider as you plan.

Lava Delta and Circular Hike

The lava delta of Lajes das Flores was formed by basalt flows that reach the sea. Its rocky headland stretches between the Farol da Ponta das Lajes lighthouse and the port of Porto das Lajes. The Costa Sul e Sudoeste area, which includes the lava delta, is designated a Special Area of Conservation within the Natura 2000 network and is a geosite of the UNESCO Global Geopark of the Azores. The landscape and its protected-area designations give this stretch of coast a clear geological and natural context.

For a hike, the Fajã de Lopo Vaz circular trail PRC04FLO is one specific option: it is 3.4 kilometres long, with a stated walking time of two hours. The start and finish are at the Miradouro da Fajã de Lopo Vaz viewpoint. The access description is separate: it begins at Lajes das Flores Town Hall. This lets you distinguish between the described access route and the designated trail endpoints when planning, and allow for the stated walking time as a separate block of time.

If you prefer to understand the landscape through its formation, the lava delta offers a different way to experience the area than the circular trail: the area is shaped by basalt flows that have reached the sea. You can give these two themes different levels of priority when planning your trip, without treating the hike and the geological formation as the same experience.

Church, Lighthouse and Architectural History

The Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário, the parish church of Lajes das Flores, was built between 1763 and 1783 on the site of the former Ermida do Espírito Santo. Its façade was decorated with azulejo tiles in the 19th century; the interior is richly adorned with wood carvings. From the church, you can look out over the port and part of Lajes das Flores. You can also use it as a starting point for exploring the Impérios of Lajes das Flores.

The Farol da Ponta das Lajes also offers a link to the town's history: the lighthouse was commissioned on 10 October 1910. Its tower is 16 metres high and stands 99 metres above sea level. These two measurements refer to different things—the height of the tower and its elevation above the sea. Lajes das Flores also has houses built of basalt ashlar masonry. A bridge dating from 1743 crosses the Ribeira dos Morros and adds a specific date to the selection of historic buildings.

Connections and Travel Planning

For travel between the places mentioned, public transport route Circuito 2 connects Lajes das Flores with Fazenda, Lomba, Caveira, R. Cruz and Santa Cruz. Circuito 3 connects Fajã, Fajãzinha, Mosteiro, Lajedo and Lajes das Flores. If you plan to use one of these routes, check the route details against the operator's current timetable.

From the port of Lajes das Flores, seasonal sea connections for passengers and vehicles serve the other islands, via Horta. The period described runs from July to August. For specific travel dates, check the current seasonal timetable. This lets you include a ferry trip as a separate part of your plans while also taking its seasonal limits into account.
