Vila do Corvo combines a compact settlement with insights into the island’s history and culture. At Casa do Tempo, along the Circuito Interpretativo da Vila and on the Cara do Índio PR01COR hiking trail, you can encounter different aspects of the destination. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between exhibitions, an interpretation of the village, a nature route and a guided tour at the bird centre, which is available by appointment only.

History, traditions and the village setting

Casa do Tempo is a visitor-accessible building of the Ecomuseu do Corvo in the old centre of Vila do Corvo. It is housed in a restored 17th- or 18th-century building whose original design has been preserved. Its audiovisual and multimedia content combines a presentation of the island with a geological and historical timeline. It also features a photo archive, eyewitness accounts, genealogical content and a documentary film. The insights therefore range from the island’s history and traditions to personal memories.

The exhibition at Casa da Memória has a distinct focus: its current permanent exhibition is “Ilha do Corvo – Marcas de um Passado”. It uses objects from the movable cultural heritage of weaving, agriculture, everyday life, carpentry and furniture-making to preserve important aspects of the history and cultural memory of the Corvo community. The Atafona do Lourenço offers another perspective. It is the only surviving one of the five animal-powered mills that once existed on Corvo. This rustic grain mill is powered by an animal, usually a cow.

Finding your way around and stories of the village

Casa da Vegia opened in 2024. It houses a scale model of the Old Town Centre of Vila do Corvo, introducing visitors to the village’s various public areas. The facility also offers a first view of the Old Town Centre from a public area on the cliff at Porto da Casa. The model and the viewpoint thus provide two different perspectives on the village.

On the Circuito Interpretativo da Vila, visitors explore the streets and Canadas and listen to residents’ stories about the community. The route also conveys Vila do Corvo’s compact urban layout, with its narrow streets and Canadas. Its focus therefore differs from that of the Cara do Índio PR01COR hiking trail, which connects the Caldeirão and Vila do Corvo geosites and passes through parts of the Costa e Caldeirão do Corvo protected area.

Nature and island culture

The Centro de Reabilitação de Aves Selvagens do Corvo offers guided tours of its facilities by prior appointment. During a visit, you may be able to observe birds that are undergoing rehabilitation at the time. If you plan to take this tour, make an appointment in advance; whether you see any birds depends on which animals are being rehabilitated there at the time.

Porto da Casa is also a useful point of reference when finding your way around the island: it is currently the only port on Corvo used for commercial and leisure purposes. At Corvo’s Festa da Sagrada Família, music, snacks and traditional cuisine accompany the celebrations. Typical tascas serve food to festival-goers.

If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Vila do Corvo, you can match your interests to the destination’s different themes: local history and cultural memory, a walk through the streets, or a route through geosites and parts of the protected area. A guided tour at the bird centre adds another planning consideration, as it requires an appointment in advance and bird sightings may be possible. This can help you decide which experiences you want to shape your stay.
