In Calheta De Nesquim, traces of whaling history meet trails through the landscape of Pico’s south coast. You can explore the town’s history at its harbor, boats and historic buildings; the PRC11PIC offers a different perspective on the surroundings. This gives you a clear question to consider when planning your trip: would you mainly like to learn about the local heritage, or also set aside time for a longer hike?

Whaling History and Historic Buildings

Calheta De Nesquim was one of the most important harbors from which whaling expeditions set out. The first sperm whale whaling company was established here in 1876. The town is also one of the whaling harbors in southern Pico and is therefore part of the region’s whaling heritage.

The restored Casa dos Botes Baleeiros houses authentic whaling boats. The Casa dos Botes is a 20th-century building made up of two large connected structures, almost entirely built of stone. The boats and the building each tell the story of local whaling in their own way.

The Igreja de São Sebastião is also one of the town’s important historic buildings. It was built in the 19th century and dates to 1852. Inside is a main altar with carvings painted gold and gray. A fixed windmill from the 20th century also stands at Monte do Outeiro. The church, windmill and Casa dos Botes each make a distinct architectural statement, while the history of whaling is not confined to any single building.

Local tradition includes the legend of a dog named Nesquim who is said to have led three shipwreck survivors to this area. Vigia da Baleia da Calheta do Nesquim is considered the town’s first whale-watching station and probably the first on Pico. When it was built, such stations did not yet have roofs.

The PRC11PIC: Circular Trail and Landscape

The PRC11PIC is a moderately difficult circular trail on the south coast. It starts and ends in the harbor area opposite the Igreja de SĂŁo SebastiĂŁo. The route is 9 km long and takes an estimated three hours. As route information may be updated by the responsible authority, check it again before your hike.

Along the way, the trail passes through Mata dos Fetais, an area with mixed vegetation, and through protected areas of Parque Natural do Pico. The landscape changes along the route: forest gives way to cultivated land and pasture, with traditional small vineyards also in the area. Stone walls divide the vineyards into elongated plots. This makes it possible to experience both the natural surroundings and the agricultural landscape on a single hike.

A whale-watching station along the route offers a chance to enjoy the view and rest. The trail brings together the different aspects of the town in a practical way: its historical significance in whaling, as well as the vineyards and varied landscape. If you mainly want to explore the buildings and local history, you can make that the focus of your visit rather than taking the longer hike; if you do the circular trail, allow for the estimated walking time in your plans.

Natural Pools and Recreation Areas

Porto da Feiteira is a small recreation area with access to natural swimming pools. Poça das Mujas is a natural pool formed by volcanic rocks. There is also a sand court for volleyball or football, as well as a bar with a terrace. As these facilities may change, check before your visit if you are specifically planning to use them.

Morricão also offers a recreation area, located on an elevated stretch of coastline. The playground there is separated from the sea. These places add other visitor interests to Calheta De Nesquim’s historic and scenic appeal. During your stay, you can decide whether to focus on the whaling history, the hike or the coastal areas, and plan your time accordingly.
