Vale De Cambra: Hiking, River Landscapes and Culture
Accommodation in Vale De Cambra
Vale de Cambra offers a range of ways to enjoy a stay: hiking trails with historical connections, river landscapes and places where the municipality’s cultural heritage can be seen.
Hiking Trails with Different Themes
The PR2 “Caminhos de Antigamente” begins beside the Igreja Matriz de S. Pedro de Castelões and follows the former pilgrimage route to the Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Saúde. The PR5 “Aldeias do Arestal,” by contrast, begins in Gestoso at the Santuário da Senhora da Saúde. The trail offers views of the coast between Espinho and Serra da Boa Viagem, as well as the mountain ranges of Montemuro and Estrela inland.
The starting point and route of the PR8 “Varandas da Freita” also provide clear landmarks: it begins in Felgueira and follows the old path towards Castanheira. A short detour leads to the Falha da Felgueira-Preguinho viewpoint. The PR4 “Trebilhadouro” runs along the slopes of Serra da Freita, near Barragem Engº Duarte Pacheco on the Rio Caima.
Rivers, Trails and Nature
The starting point and a specific structure are part of the PR3 “Vereda do Pastor” route: it begins in Côvo, the highest village in the municipality, on the southern slope of Serra da Freita, and crosses a stone footbridge at Ribeira das Estacas. Water lizards, Iberian frogs and otters find a habitat in the wooded areas of Levada de Santa Cruz.
The Poço do Linho waterfall lies on Ribeira de Paraduça, at the entrance to the village of Paraduça. The Turfeiras da Freita, meanwhile, are located in the Serras da Freita e Arada Natura 2000 site (PTCON0047) and are among the rarest and most diverse habitats in the mountains there.
Praia Fluvial de Burgães is another landmark for a stay by the water. The river beach lies on the Rio Caima in São Pedro de Castelões, is about five minutes from Vale de Cambra town centre and is considered easily accessible. It is the municipality’s only river beach with a lifeguard.
Museum, Villages and Traditions
The Museu Municipal de Vale de Cambra is housed in the former town hall of Macieira de Cambra, a 19th-century building. The museum places particular emphasis on the municipality’s industrial heritage and offers guided tours and activity programmes. Traditional granite houses with slate roofs shape the appearance of Felgueira. The village lies amid the green natural surroundings of Serra da Freita and beside the clear waters of the Rio Cabrum. Two important religious festivals are held there every year: the Festa de São Tiago and the Nossa Senhora da Liberação festival.
Recurring events and walking routes are also part of Vale de Cambra’s cultural offering. The traditional Marchas de Santo António have been held every year since 1984. The Roteiro de Santo António – Coração da Cidade runs through the town centre and can be completed on foot. Another tradition is the Roteiro Presépios Comunitários: it began in Arões and Junqueira and now covers the entire municipality of Vale de Cambra.
Route Networks and Mills
In Vale de Cambra, the Rota da Água e da Pedra is represented by the Arestal, Caima and Freita routes; 15 points of interest are spread across these three routes. The Moinhos de Paraduça offer a closer look at the construction of watermills: in Arões, five mills have granite walls and slate roofs, each with a pair of millstones. They are part of the Grande Rota das Montanhas Mágicas and the Rota da Água e da Pedra.
