São Jacinto: Beach, Dunes and Nature

São Jacinto offers several starting points for planning your trip: an extensive sandy beach, water sports on the sea and Ria sides, and trails through varied landscapes. Sandy beach and water activities

Praia de São Jacinto has an extensive, almost unspoiled sandy beach. Surfing and bodyboarding are popular on the sea side. On the calmer side, facing the Ria de Aveiro, sailing and sport fishing are among the most sought-after activities. The two waterside settings therefore offer two clearly distinct options: waves on the sea side and calmer conditions on the Ria side.

Praia de São Jacinto is also ideal for long walks. The sandy beach seems to stretch almost endlessly to the north. The Ria de Aveiro has just one connection to the sea: a channel that cuts through the coastal strip between Barra and São Jacinto. This describes the special relationship between the coast, beach and lagoon without treating the two waterside settings as the same.

Two circular trails, different routes

The municipal management plan for 2023 to 2025 lists approximate lengths for two signposted circular routes on the nature discovery trail. The red route is about 7.5 kilometres long. It crosses a raised boardwalk to the outer dune ridge and continues to the Pateira Pequena and Pateira Grande lagoons.

The green route is shorter, at about 3.5 kilometres. It runs through the forest and leads to the smaller Pateira Pequena lagoon. When comparing the two routes, their length and the landscapes they pass through are useful points of difference: the red route reaches two lagoons and crosses a raised boardwalk, while the green route goes through the forest to the smaller lagoon. Both distances are approximate.

A nature conservation notice from 2021 prohibits access to the primary dune to protect plant species. Check the current conditions on site before your visit.

Nature watching and cycling connection

The artificial Pateira pond was created in the 1980s. A nature conservation description from 2021 highlights its importance as an important site for overwintering ducks. The animals you may see can vary by season, so winter sightings should not be taken as representative of what you will see throughout the year.

The nature reserve visitor centre organises guided visits along the nature discovery trail. If you’re planning a guided visit, check the arrangements before your trip. This way, you can include the guided tour as a separate part of your plans rather than treating it as the same as walking the route on your own.

The completed Via Ciclável de São Jacinto connects the ferry terminal, the beach and the Reserva Natural das Dunas de São Jacinto. These three points are linked by the cycle route. Cycling can therefore be a separate theme for your stay, alongside beach walks or water sports.

Church, festival and arrival

The Ermida is now the parish church of the Freguesia São Jacinto. A Cruzeiro is said to have been erected next to the Ermida in 1584. The “is said to have been” reflects the uncertainty of this historical account: the year should be understood as an uncertain attribution, not a confirmed date.
