Caldas de São Jorge: Thermal Baths, Trails and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Caldas de São Jorge
When choosing a hotel in Caldas de São Jorge, the focus of your trip can make all the difference: the Termas de São Jorge, several hiking trails and local cultural heritage offer different points of interest. The thermal baths are located in Caldas de São Jorge on the Rio Uíma. For hiking enthusiasts, the type of route is particularly useful: alongside several circular routes, there is also a linear trail along the riverbank. This makes it easy to choose what suits your interest in thermal waters, outdoor activity or history.
Thermal Baths and Travel Dates
The 2026 thermal season is scheduled to run from February 23 to December 12; these dates do not apply to later years. The waters of the Termas de São Jorge are used for therapies for rheumatic, musculoskeletal, respiratory and skin conditions. If you are travelling for the thermal baths, plan your visit within this season.
Circular Routes and Riverside Trail
There are several types of routes to choose from. “Caminhos rurais – Caldas de São Jorge” is a circular hiking trail that starts and ends beside the Termas de S. Jorge. “À Descoberta dos Açudes – Caldas São Jorge” is also circular, with its starting and ending point at the Termas de S. Jorge. “Travessia das Pontes – Caldas de São Jorge” is also a circular route. This distinguishes the three circular routes from the linear trail along the Rio Uíma.
“Rio Uíma – Caldas de São Jorge” is a linear trail on unpaved ground. It follows the banks of the Rio Uíma from the Termas de Caldas de S. Jorge to the Parque de Lazer de Pigeiros. The trail is accessible to everyone; check local conditions and accessibility before setting out. Its linear route, riverside setting and unpaved ground distinguish it from the circular trails.
The same important navigation guidance applies to all the trails mentioned: they are not signposted or marked and can only be followed using the GPS track. Plan your navigation using the GPS track rather than relying on signs along the way. This applies whether you choose a circular route or the linear trail.
Architecture and Tradition
The cultural heritage here also offers different points of interest. The Casa Senhorial em Caldas de São Jorge is a building of civil architecture. Its protection status is “Em Vias de Classificação” (under consideration for classification); it is also homologated as IM – Municipal Interest. The protection status may change as the classification process progresses.
“Apregoar das Almas” is a ritual tradition in Caldas de São Jorge associated with Lent that had almost disappeared. Together, a specific building with heritage protection status and a local ritual tradition represent distinct themes in the area’s cultural history.
