Esmoriz between the Lagoon, Beach and Crafts
Accommodation in Esmoriz
Esmoriz offers several starting points for planning a trip: the coastal lagoon of Barrinha, Praia de Esmoriz with its beach and water sports, and traces of the town’s fishing and craft traditions. If you’re looking for a hotel, you can plan your stay around the destinations that interest you most.
Lagoon, beach and water sports
Barrinha de Esmoriz, also known as Lagoa de Paramos, is a rare medium-sized coastal lagoon and is considered unique along Portugal’s north coast. 129 bird species are regularly found at Barrinha, with a further 33 occurring occasionally or rarely. The boardwalk at Barrinha is about six kilometres long, offering a specific point of reference for anyone planning a walk or hike.
Praia de Esmoriz has fine sand and an expansive beach area. The Barrinha section of Praia de Esmoriz is considered particularly suitable for surfing and bodyboarding; check the sea conditions locally. Barrinha Surf School in Esmoriz offers surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, bodyboarding and skimboarding. While the beach is particularly associated with surfing and bodyboarding, the school also offers stand-up paddleboarding and skimboarding.
Routes in Parque Ambiental do Buçaquinho
Parque Ambiental do Buçaquinho is located in Esmoriz/Cortegaça. It has walking and cycling routes on unpaved or wooden paths. If you’re deciding between a walk and a bike ride, the path surfaces are a specific detail to consider when planning. The park thus complements the coastal destinations with routes you can explore on foot or by bike.
Palheiros and craft traditions
Praia de Esmoriz preserves several palheiros: typical wooden houses from the 19th century, built as second homes by farming families who also fished. Eight palheiros from Praia Velha are on the edge of Esmoriz town centre, on the streets adjoining Capela de Nossa Senhora dos Aflitos. These details link a distinctive style of architecture with the history of families who combined farming and fishing.
Cordoaria is also part of the local fishing history. Historically, it supported the fishing industry, in which Arte Xávega was already well established. The Farramenta cooperage was founded in Esmoriz in 1912 by Manuel Dias Ferreira and became Tanoaria Josafer Lda. in 1962. On a guided tour of Tanoaria Josafer, you can learn about the company’s history and manufacturing process. Tours are available year-round, Monday to Sunday, by prior arrangement; confirm the booking details before your trip.
