Mills and rural trails

The Parque Temático Molinológico is a living museum with twelve watermills spread across four areas. The Rota do Moleiro connects these areas; the route is rated as easy and has several rest and leisure areas. Guided tours at the Núcleo Museológico do Moinho e do Pão showcase working mills and the processing of different types of grain. Both the mills themselves and the milling process take centre stage.

The Rota dos Espigueiros offers a different rural perspective. The route focuses on an espigueiro in the village of Vilarinho de S. Luís, in the Freguesia of Palmaz, amid a distinctly rural landscape. At Turismo Industrial de Oliveira de Azeméis, visitors can also experience local production processes and learn about the techniques used by local companies. Cultural heritage in town and in the museums

The Igreja Matriz de Oliveira de Azeméis was built between 1719 and 1729. Its exterior features azulejo panels depicting scenes from the life of Jesus. The Cruzeiro do Pinheiro da Bemposta is a national monument dating from 1604 and was later restored. The Malaposta do Curval also recalls the history of transport: the building is classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público and was one of 32 stops on the stagecoach route between Porto and Lisbon.

The Casa-Museu Regional de Oliveira de Azeméis was founded by local citizens who had been invited by the donors João Marques de Almeida Carvalho and Constantino José de Carvalho. The Casa-Museu Ferreira de Castro is housed in a building dating from the mid-19th century and preserves the writer’s books, manuscripts and personal belongings. The Museu Regional de Cucujães displays traditional tools, regional costumes and archaeological material.

Routes by length and theme

A circular route of around 1,800 metres runs through the historic centre, starting and ending at the Loja Interativa de Turismo. Another route is the short, approximately three-kilometre Rota do Rio, which follows the River Antuã in Figueiredo, in the Freguesia of Pinheiro da Bemposta. These routes let you compare the circular walk in the historic centre with the riverside trail, based on the locations and lengths given for each.

In Figueiredo, the Rota do Rey also passes built historic heritage dating back to the time of the Foral de Figueiredo e Bemposta. The Roteiro Literário Ferreira de Castro covers 13 kilometres in Ossela and includes 30 stops. The Trilhos do Comandante are designated for various outdoor activities and are suitable for mountain biking, trail running, hiking, walking and running.

Local specialities and getting around

Pão de Ul and regueifa de Ul are traditionally baked in wood-fired ovens. Papas de S. Miguel is made with meat marinated in Vinho d’alho and cornmeal. Beijinhos de Azeméis are among Oliveira de Azeméis’ traditional confectionery specialities; cheese is also especially prominent among the area’s gastronomic products. These different products give the local cuisine its own distinct accents.
