Luso: Thermal Traditions, Forest and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Luso
There are many different reasons to choose Luso as a travel destination, including its thermal traditions, landscape, religious heritage and architecture. To get your bearings, it is worth considering the specific differences between forest and viewpoints, routes shaped by religious heritage, thermal baths and park attractions.
Forest Landscape and Views
Mata Nacional do Bussaco covers 105 hectares and is home to exceptionally rich biological diversity. It is mostly surrounded by monoculture plantations of pine and eucalyptus. The biodiverse forest and its surroundings, shaped by these tree plantations, therefore present a clear contrast. This aspect of the landscape helps you view Mata not in isolation, but also in relation to its surroundings.
A notable high point is Miradouro da Cruz Alta: at 547 metres, it is the highest point in Serra do Buçaco. From here, views extend west to the Atlantic Ocean, southeast to Serra da Estrela and northeast across Serra do Caramulo. These different directions place the viewpoint within a broader landscape.
Routes and Religious Heritage
The Via Sacra in Mata Nacional do Bussaco is three kilometres long and has 20 stations depicting the captivity and Passion of Christ. It can be compared with a different kind of route, the Grande Rota do Bussaco: 56 kilometres long, it follows a linear, star-shaped layout, has three sections and is centred on Mata Nacional do Bussaco. These details show the difference between the shorter Via Sacra, structured around stations, and the much longer route with its three sections. Check the current trail conditions for the Grande Rota before setting out.
The history of Convento do Buçaco dates back to 1628. That year, the Order of Discalced Carmelites founded the only Portuguese Carmelite desert in the forest. Mata is therefore also associated with a distinctive religious history.
Architectural History in Buçaco
Palace Hotel do Buçaco is a complex built between 1888 and 1922 in the Historicist style. Casa dos Brasões was built as a royal pavilion attached to the hotel. It was intended to accommodate monarchs on their journeys to Buçaco. Thus, the hotel complex is notable for its construction period and architectural style, while Casa dos Brasões is notable for its intended royal function.
