The Pateira de Fermentelos, hiking trails and local landmarks offer different ways to enjoy a trip to Fermentelos. You can explore the natural landscape, plan a hike or learn about the town’s history and culture.

The Pateira de Fermentelos Natural Area

The Pateira de Fermentelos is part of the Ria de Aveiro Special Protection Area (PTZPE0004) and is therefore included in the Natura 2000 network. It is considered the largest natural lake on the Iberian Peninsula. The lake is the main attraction if you choose Fermentelos primarily for its scenery and nature.

Traditional bateiras are another part of the experience at the Pateira. Before your trip, check whether boat trips are offered and when. The Parque do Emigrante, a leisure and recreation area, is located in Fermentelos on the left bank. It is home to the Monumento ao Emigrante, which honours Portuguese emigrants, particularly people born in this freguesia.

Hiking Trails around the Pateira

The PR7 Trilho dos Poços is a circular trail. Largo da Pateira, near the Estalagem in Fermentelos, serves as a landmark for its starting point, but you can begin the loop anywhere along the route. The trail is listed as taking three to four hours. Along the way, you will find wells, some of which still have traditional water wheels. They recall the former importance of these structures.

The GR58 Percurso Dourado hiking stage from SegadĂŁes to Sangalhos offers a different type of route. This stage is shaped by the Pateira de Fermentelos. While the PR7 is described as a circular trail, the GR58 section follows a stage between the two named towns. When planning, you can therefore choose between a loop and a clearly defined point-to-point stage.

Viewpoints and Landmarks

The Miradouro de Fermentelos, also known as the Miradouro do Outeiro, was built between 1960 and 1961. It offers a privileged view of the Pateira’s waters and the surrounding area. The two names refer to the same viewpoint, while the construction dates also place it within the town’s history.

The Monumento Ă  MĂșsica e ao MĂșsico stands at Largo da Senhora da SaĂșde. This group of sculptures, created by the artist Paulo Neves, was installed in 2021. The monument commemorates several generations of musicians from Fermentelos and their music. The parish church of Fermentelos contains gilded wooden altarpieces from the 16th and 18th centuries—two distinct periods reflected in the building.

Music and Local Traditions

The Banda Marcial de Fermentelos was founded in 1868. It is also known as Filarmónica Fermentelense, Banda Velha or “Rambóia,” and is based in the freguesia of Fermentelos in the municipality of Águeda. Its long history adds an institutional dimension to the local music culture, alongside its monuments and decorative features.

Gastronomic traditions include the chapters regularly held by the Confraria da Pateira, where traditional local recipes are presented. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the dates in advance. Nature, hiking, music history and culinary traditions thus offer different points of interest when choosing a place to stay in Fermentelos.
