Alquerubim – Heritage on the Vouga
Accommodation in Alquerubim
Alquerubim lies on the right bank of the Vouga in a fertile alluvial plain. Consider which of these themes you would like to shape your stay most. This will help you decide whether Alquerubim is the right destination before choosing a hotel.
Landscape and history
Quinta da Fontoura is in the parish of Beduído, between farmland and the banks of the Vouga. The estate is also known for the Água de S. Brás spring-water supply; the water is considered pure.
Paus also has its own historical significance: King Manuel granted a charter to the Vila de Paus. This event sits alongside later traces of the past that can be read in the buildings. If you are interested in local history, you can consider these different references as part of Alquerubim’s cultural character.
Buildings and milling tradition
The Igreja Matriz de Santa Marinha is located on Rua Major Geraldo in Alquerubim. The present church building developed through the alteration and expansion of another building, which was constructed in the late 17th or early 18th century. The church also has 18th-century Baroque altarpieces. Its construction history and furnishings therefore offer two different points of interest: the building’s development and its Baroque design.
In the parish of Fontes, the Cruzeiro de Fontes stands at Largo Dr. José Pereira Lemos beside the Igreja de Santa Marinha. Following restoration, the monument remains at its original location. In Paus is the Capela de Nossa Senhora das Dores, which was formerly dedicated to Saint Peter. Another building with a recorded date is Casa de Fontes, from 1873. These examples represent different forms of cultural heritage: a church, chapel, wayside cross and house.
The Moinho do Maia was formerly known as Moinho do Tupinho and is part of the Rota dos Moinhos de Albergaria-a-Velha in Alquerubim. The route is intended for residents and visitors who want to learn about the municipality, its people and its history. The mill also has a story of traditional craftsmanship: a local artisan reconstructed it and passed on knowledge of how to build mills and mill parts, as well as how to sharpen and adjust millstones.
Festivals in honour of Santa Marinha were held in Alquerubim from 18 to 21 July 2024, and again from 18 to 21 July 2025. These two periods are specific historical reference points, not a current events calendar. If you are planning a trip around the celebrations, check the dates for your travel year.
Park and practical information
Parque da Quinta do Passal is suitable for picnics and family gatherings. The listed facilities include a children’s playground, a water supply point, toilets, sports equipment and a footpath. As facilities of this kind may change over time, it is advisable to check their current condition before visiting.
Another local landmark is the EN 16/2: a 560-metre section of pavement was built along the road in Alquerubim, separating pedestrian and vehicle areas.
To choose between the different themes, weigh up what each has to offer: the church, chapel and Cruzeiro represent architectural and religious history; the mill and route focus on traditional craftsmanship. Quinta da Fontoura evokes fields, riverbanks and spring water, while Parque da Quinta do Passal is suited to picnics and family gatherings. This will help you choose Alquerubim based on the local features that matter most to your stay.
