Police combines historic sites in the Old Town with a riverside area on the Łarpia and several routes that start in the town. When planning your stay, you can choose between architecture, local cemetery history and longer routes. If you’re looking for a hotel in Police, one simple question can help you decide: would you like your stay to focus mainly on historic sites, the waterfront or a route? The following destinations offer different points of interest for each option.

Old Town: cemetery fragments and church remains

In Park Staromiejski, in the southern part of Police’s Old Town, Polickie Lapidarium stands on a small hill. It occupies the site of a former cemetery and preserves and displays fragments of tombstones from former German cemeteries that once lay within what is now the municipality of Police. The collection puts the tombstones themselves in the spotlight: its approximately 125 pieces include stelae with well-preserved inscriptions and stylised tree trunks. Here, different forms meet surviving lettering.

The Lapidarium was established in 1998 on the initiative of local authorities and historian Jan Matura. Looking at the collection leads from individual tombstone forms to the story of how it came into being. For a themed itinerary, you can compare this site with the churches in the Old Town: here, the focus is on fragments from former cemeteries; there, on the architectural remains and designs of churches.

A Gothic chapel stands at Plac Bolesława Chrobrego in the centre of the market square. It is the only surviving remnant of the 13th-century Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which was demolished towards the end of the 19th century. The chapel thus connects a surviving building with the history of a church that no longer exists. This is a different historical reference from the Lapidarium, whose collection is shaped by tombstones from former cemeteries.

Another architectural landmark is Kościół Mariacki, a 19th-century Neo-Gothic church. Its tower is over 60 metres high and can be seen from afar in Police’s skyline. Together with the chapel, it offers two different perspectives on church architecture: the chapel as the surviving remnant of an older church building, and the Neo-Gothic church, whose tall tower is part of the town’s skyline.

Łarpia and activities on the water

Right next to the Old Town, there is a developed riverside area on the Łarpia with moorings for kayaks. It also offers opportunities for fishing and relaxation. This gives Police a connection to the water alongside its historic attractions. There is also a marina on the Łarpia in the Old Town, used by sailing associations and clubs. The kayak moorings, fishing and recreational opportunities on the one hand, and the marina used by clubs on the other, represent different uses of the Łarpia.

Compare trails by length and route

The yellow hiking trail “Szlak Policki” starts at the Rynek in Police and leads via Trzeszczyn, Stare Leśno and the Szczecin–Tanowo road to Bartoszewo. It is 11.6 kilometres long. Unlike the circular routes, this trail ends in Bartoszewo rather than where it began. The options described here therefore differ not only in length, but also in their routes.

Two longer routes in the municipality of Police also start and end in Police. The “Dookoła gminy Police” circular route is about 48 kilometres long and runs through the municipality. The “Nad brzegi śródleśnych jezior” circular route is about 58 kilometres long. These three trails can be compared using this information: the yellow hiking trail is shorter and goes as far as Bartoszewo; the two circular routes start and end in Police and are considerably longer. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

The options in Police range from individual historic sites in the Old Town to the riverside area on the Łarpia and routes of varying lengths. These themes can help you tailor your stay to the things that interest you most.
