Niechorze: Lighthouse, Coast and Fishing Culture
Accommodation in Niechorze
In Niechorze, a striking coastal landscape, fishing traditions and a range of visitor interests come together. When planning your trip, you can focus on what interests you most: a historic lighthouse and views of the coast, local fishing culture, or nature around Lake Liwia-Łuża. Each attraction has its own focus, from architecture and coastal views to butterflies and fishing huts.
Lighthouse and coastal views
The Niechorze Lighthouse was built in 1866. It is 45 metres high and stands on a 22-metre-high cliff—two different measurements describing the structure and its location. The viewing terrace offers views of the sea and the picturesque surroundings. From the large pier, you can also see Niechorze’s coastline, the transition between dune and cliff coast, and the local lighthouse. This lets you compare different views of the coastal landscape: the view from the terrace and the views from the pier of the coast and the tower.
The large pier is also a practical point of reference when planning your visit: admission is free when sea conditions are safe. The shore reinforcement on the high cliff near the lighthouse still serves as a promenade. The lighthouse is also on the Polish Baltic Coast Lighthouse Trail. Another connection is the international Velo Baltica cycling route, formerly R-10, which passes by the lighthouse. The promenade, coastal trail and cycle route therefore each represent a different link to the area around the structure.
Fishing culture and regional traditions
The Ethnographic Park in Niechorze features traditional fishing huts and shares knowledge about the traditions of Baltic Sea fishing. With the “Droga Ryby” and “Droga Chleba” educational trails, the park explores two named themes. The huts and trails make a visit an opportunity to learn about the ways of life and food traditions connected with fishing—unlike the viewpoints, where the coast and the structure take centre stage.
The Muzeum Rybołówstwa Morskiego in Niechorze is also dedicated to local fishing culture. It was designed as a centre for sharing knowledge with visitors and local residents. You can therefore encounter the subject of fishing in two different places: the Ethnographic Park features fishing huts and educational trails, while the museum focuses on sharing knowledge about local fishing culture.
Miniature lighthouses and butterflies
At Miniatur Latarnia Morska park, you can see lighthouse models at a scale of 1:10. Visitors can see all the lighthouses on the Polish coast in one place in 45 minutes. Those interested in lighthouses will find a different perspective here from that of the historic structure itself: rather than a single tower on site, the focus is on models and the coastal lighthouses as a whole.
The Motylarnia in Niechorze offers a very different experience. There, you can observe live exotic butterflies moving freely. You can also watch colourful butterflies emerge from their chrysalises. Visitors can learn about the habits and secrets of butterflies, too. The Motylarnia thus combines close observation with learning, while the miniature park presents structures as models.
Trails and nature nearby
The lighthouse connects to several different routes: it is on the Lighthouse Trail and is also passed by the Velo Baltica cycle route. The shore reinforcement near the tower serves as a promenade. Each of these details describes a different way to explore the coast and the lighthouse; they do not imply a continuous route between the places.
Lake Liwia-Łuża lies south of Niechorze. It has been an ornithological reserve since the late 1950s. A total of 133 bird species have been recorded at the lake, including 50 breeding species. East of the lighthouse, a sandy spit separates the lake from the Baltic Sea. The lake and spit add a distinct landscape element to the coastal views. This nature information differs from the attractions in town: the focus here is on the lake’s location, its reserve status and the bird species recorded there.
