Siemczyno: Castle, Park and Culture
Accommodation in Siemczyno
You can get to know Siemczyno through three themes associated with the town: the castle and its exhibitions, the historic park and the ceramics activities on the castle grounds. If you want to focus your stay on culture, these highlights can help shape your choice of destination. The museum focuses on interpretations of the Baroque and various crafts, while the park tells the story of gardens and landscape design. The workshops at KuĹşnia Ceramiczna offer a different focus. You can weigh up whether you are most interested in exhibitions, architecture, park design or ceramics.
Museum and Castle Architecture
Siemczyno Castle is home to the Museum of the Pomeranian Region in Siemczyno (Muzeum Ziemi Pomorskiej w Siemczynie), which has two permanent exhibitions: the Interactive Baroque Museum and the Universe of Various Crafts. The Interactive Baroque Museum is housed in the castle’s spacious cellars. Through historical interpretation and design, its rooms convey what a Baroque court and its everyday life might have looked like. The focus is therefore on imagining a way of life from the past. The rooms invite visitors to touch, search and ask questions, making the exhibition an interactive exploration.
The castle’s design offers another way to explore the site. Its floor plan is horseshoe-shaped, with a terrace in the middle. The central section is covered by a mansard roof, the left wing has several storeys, and the right wing is a low extension. The contrast between the multi-storey left wing and the low right-hand extension makes the different sections of the building particularly clear.
Baroque Park and Landscape
South of the castle lies a park covering more than three hectares, laid out in the 18th century. The castle and park complex in Siemczyno is one of the few Baroque gardens in north-western Poland to have survived to the present day. The park thus combines an 18th-century layout with a Baroque garden design that has endured to the present. Former ponds border its southern side and are connected by a ditch to Lake Wilczkowo. The park, ponds and ditch are distinct, specifically named features of the landscape.
Underground Passage and Ceramic Workshops
Another feature of the historic park is the underground passage, about 80 metres long, between the linden-hornbeam avenue and the pond. It was discovered and cleared—or reopened for passage—in 2019; it used to lead from the castle. The passage is open to visitors. Check its current condition before your visit. The park therefore brings together different points in time: its creation in the 18th century and the discovery of the passage in 2019.
Individual and group ceramics workshops are held at KuĹşnia Ceramiczna on the castle grounds. The workshops complement the two permanent exhibitions with another way to engage with the site. As you plan your trip, you can weigh up an exhibition visit, architecture, the landscape or a ceramics workshop; these themes offer different ways to shape your stay in Siemczyno.
