Ogonki on Lake Święcajty
Accommodation in Ogonki
Ogonki lies on Lake Święcajty and combines a beach, a marina, waterways and cycling routes with traces of history. This gives you different starting points for planning your trip: you can explore the lakeside landscape, consider cycling routes or look into the history of the passage between the lakes.
Lake, marina and waterway
Lake Święcajty is an arm of Lake Mamry. It covers 874 hectares and is up to 28 metres deep. Its shoreline is highly irregular, and it also has two islands. These features give the lake its distinctive landscape, although the shoreline does not look the same everywhere.
In Ogonki, the Mamry–Sapina waterway ends where the Sapina River flows into Lake Święcajty. The waterway across Lakes Mamry and Święcajty is classified as Class II; navigation is regulated seasonally. If you are planning a trip, it is best to check the latest information from the relevant authority, as navigation standards may be updated. Ogonki also has a marina.
Beach and getting around
Kąpielisko Ogonki is an unpatrolled beach on Lake Święcajty. Sailboats can moor at a wooden pier. The beach is right next to National Road 63 and is separated from it by safety barriers. Across the road, there are ice cream stands, cafés, restaurants, mountain bike rental shops and a car park.
Two points are especially useful to bear in mind when visiting: the beach is unpatrolled, and beach conditions and seasonal services may change. If needed, check the latest information in advance, particularly if you are counting on a specific service.
Cycling routes around Ogonki
On the stretch from Pozezdrze to Ogonki, the Stręgiel Lake circular cycling route follows the blue “Błękitna wstęga jezior” cycle route. The circular route takes a path to Ogonki that was built on a former railway line and passes through marshland. This makes it possible to understand the route not only by its destinations, but also by its course and the landscape along the way.
Another route description concerns the Green Velo cycle route: a comfortable cycle path branches off from the promenade and follows the former railway line towards Ogonki. The sections described differ in their points of reference: one follows the Stręgiel Lake circular route and its shared stretch with the blue cycle route, while the other follows the branch from the Green Velo cycle route. Signage and trail conditions may change, so it may be useful to check the latest route information before setting out.
History at the crossing between the lakes
A Second World War bunker stands by the bridge in Ogonki. It served as a fortification at the strategic passage between the lakes. Ice sailing is also part of the history of the village and Lake Święcajty: before the war, both were known for it.
The wider Węgorzewski destination also has historical attractions in Węgorzewo. Cmentarz nad jez. Święcajty is a cemetery for soldiers who fell in the First World War. It contains the graves of 344 German and 234 Russian soldiers. The grounds of Muzeum Kultury Ludowej include a small open-air museum of traditional Masurian architecture, including wooden houses from the 18th and 19th centuries.
