Ukta in Masuria is a starting point for the Krutynia and also a place with its own church history. In the center, on Voivodeship Road 610 between Piecki and Ruciane-Nida, there is a bridge near which a kayak can conveniently be launched. For an overnight hotel stay, this location makes a difference: if you plan to paddle, check the route from your actual hotel to your chosen launch point, and plan your return separately from the river stretch.

From the Bridge onto the Krutynia

The documented kayak launch near the bridge is useful local information, but it is not a guarantee of boat rentals, parking, or safe conditions at every water level. If you are planning a trip, check equipment, return transport, and current navigability with a local provider. A hotel room includes neither a kayak nor a transfer, even if the accommodation is in the same village.

Below Ukta, a stretch of the Krutynia flows through the “Krutynia” nature reserve, also called “Krutynia Dolna.” A roughly two-kilometer section is known as “Mała Amazonka” (“Little Amazon”) because of its many meanders, fallen tree trunks, and swampy, difficult-to-access banks. This is a vivid description of the landscape and also a reason to choose your trip carefully. The banks are not suitable as arbitrary places to get out. Stay on designated routes and follow conservation and safety rules. The name “Little Amazon” says nothing about how difficult the stretch is for beginners.

Church and a Memorial by the River

The Church of the Holy Cross was built between 1860 and 1864 as a Protestant church. Its interior is adorned with a Renaissance painting depicting the Lamentation of Christ before his burial. If you would like to learn about local history after a day on the river, you can visit the church as a separate stop. This does not guarantee opening hours or access to the interior, so check in advance.

Karol Wojtyła stayed in Ukta on August 1 and 2, 1957, during a summer kayak trip with acquaintances. An obelisk on the banks of the Krutynia commemorates this visit. This specific historical connection links today’s paddling region with a documented earlier visit to the river. The obelisk is a memorial; it says nothing about the course of a present-day kayak route or a religious event.

Choose a Hotel for Your Day’s Travels

For a day of kayaking, the launch point, take-out point, and return journey matter; for a short visit to the village, proximity to the church and riverside memorial obelisk may matter more. Check the exact hotel address and the services included in the actual offer. The local information does not confirm available rooms, boat rentals, or guaranteed access to the protected riverbanks. If you are staying for just one night, you can choose one main focus rather than turning separate facts about the village into an unsupported all-in-one tour.

Before a longer paddling trip, ask whether the planned stretch is actually within the nature reserve and where an authorized take-out point is located. The bridge alone does not answer the question of how to get back.
