At Iznota, the kayak route across Zatoka Iznocka to Lake Bełdany and Galindia on the lakeshore are distinct points of interest. Nearby, the Krutynia kayak route adds a longer course and river sections named for their landscapes to the area’s water-related attractions. For orientation, it is useful to distinguish the local connection from the longer route and the individual sections of the Krutynia.

Kayaks and waterways

There is a place to launch kayaks by the road bridge in Iznota. From there, the kayak route leads across Zatoka Iznocka to Lake Bełdany. The Krutynia flows into the lake about 0.5 km from the launch site. This means the local waterscape can be understood through three points: the bridge and launch site, the bay, and the lake. If you include launching a kayak in your plans, check the current condition of the launch site in person.

Lake Bełdany covers 940.6 ha and is part of the Masurian Lake District route. The Krutynia kayak route also runs nearby: it is over 100 km long and leads from Sorkwity on Lake Lampackie to Ruciane-Nida on Lake Nidzkie. The 940.6 ha describes the lake’s area, while over 100 km is the length of the kayak route; the figures therefore show two different scales of the waterscape. The starting and ending points also make the longer route’s geographical course tangible.

The Krutynia below Ukta

Nearby, below Ukta, the Krutynia flows through the “Krutynia” nature reserve, sometimes also called “Krutynia Dolna.” A two-kilometre stretch of the Krutynia below Ukta is known as “Mała Amazonka” because of its many meanders, fallen tree trunks, and inaccessible, marshy banks. The names refer to different scales: “Krutynia” or “Krutynia Dolna” is the name of the nature reserve, while “Mała Amazonka” refers to a specific stretch. Meanders are river bends; here, together with the tree trunks and marshy banks, they are among the landscape features described.

The difference in scale between the over-100-km-long Krutynia kayak route and the two-kilometre “Mała Amazonka” stretch helps put the figures in context. The first refers to a route between Sorkwity and Ruciane-Nida, and the second to a specific stretch of river below Ukta. This makes the difference between a region-spanning route and a named section of landscape tangible for your trip planning.

Galindia on Lake Bełdany

Galindia is a site in Iznota, directly on the shore of Lake Bełdany, designed to resemble an Old Prussian settlement. The grounds feature large sculptures and trees that grow with their roots pointing upwards. The site is therefore on the same lake reached by the kayak route from Iznota. A municipal article from 2020 lists forest walks, trips in boats designed in an Old Prussian style, and themed events as part of the offerings at that time. If you are considering any of these activities for your plans, check in advance what is currently available.
