Purdka can be understood through two specific themes: a land grant from the 14th century and a kayak route that passes through the village. Each offers a different perspective. The historical record gives the date, legal basis, and recipients; the water route can be described by its markings, length, and course along the river. One perspective places the settlement in time, while the other describes a route through the village. Together, they provide clear starting points for planning your trip: local history and paddling.

Local history: the 1374 land grant

On January 26, 1374, the Warmia Cathedral Chapter granted land under Prussian law to the Prussians Andrzej, Piotr, and Kristan in the already-established village settlement of Purden. Andrzej and Piotr jointly received four free hides of land, and Kristan received five. The date therefore marks a land grant within an existing village, not its founding. Purden, the settlement’s historical name, is connected with Purdka. The event can be understood as a specifically dated allocation to three named recipients; the differing amounts granted are as much a part of the historical record as the legal basis. The key point for understanding the timeline is that the settlement already existed when the grant was made.

Kayak route through Purdka

The black-marked Granica–Sanktuarium kayak route is 24.5 kilometers long and follows the Kośna River through Purdka. The route name, marking, and distance each provide a different point of reference: they identify the route, its marking, and its total length. The distance is a measure of length, not time. The main section of the kayak route through Purda municipality also passes through Purdka, among other places. This places the village along the kayak route, while the 24.5 kilometers applies to the named Granica–Sanktuarium route. If you are planning a trip, check local conditions beforehand.

River section and trip planning

Along the section through Purdka, the river is very wide and shallow; the depth there can be a little more than half a meter. Width and depth describe different features: one concerns the river’s breadth, the other the depth of its water. The depth varies with conditions and is therefore not a fixed value. These details about the river’s shape add a local dimension to the kayak route’s distance. The route length describes the entire route, while the river features characterize the section through Purdka.
