Rentyny is a holiday village on the northern shore of Lake Giłwa, also known as Lake Rentyńskie. The lake is a prominent reference point in describing the village; Rentyny is also on the Szlak Świętej Warmii, the Saint Warmia Trail. A section of the Way of St. James also runs along the lake here. For your travel planning, the village thus combines a specific lakeside location with several named routes.

Rentyny between the lake and Warmia

Rentyny is located in historic Warmia, in the Gietrzwałd municipality in Olsztyn County. Warmia refers to the historic regional context; the municipality and county provide the village’s administrative setting. When finding your bearings, it helps to keep these levels distinct: the lake describes the location by the water, while Warmia, the municipality and the county identify the regional and administrative context.

Woods, shorelines and the lake

Lake Rentyńskie, also known as Lake Giłwa, is surrounded by woods. Its shores are hilly and partly steep, while in places they slope gently down to the water. Reeds and marsh vegetation also grow along the shore. The shoreline is therefore varied, with steeper sections alongside areas where the land slopes more gently towards the water. Hydrologically, Lake Rentyńskie is a flow-through lake. Together, the woods, shoreline formations, wetland vegetation and hydrological classification give a more detailed picture of the lake. A flow-through lake has an inflow and an outflow.

Pilgrim route and cycling route

On the Way of St. James, a pilgrimage route option that is about 3 km longer passes through Rentyny along Lake Giłwa. The three kilometres refers to the additional distance compared with the other option, not the total length. Check route conditions before setting out. A section of the Way of St. James runs from Rentyny onwards to Woryty and Gietrzwałd; part of its route follows Lake Giłwa. These details answer two different questions for finding your way: which pilgrimage route option is longer and which places the named section connects.

The yellow cycling route is 11.8 km long in total, passes through Rentyny and runs mostly through the woods, with short sections in open terrain. The distance figures should be read differently: for the Way of St. James, 3 km is the additional distance of one option; for the cycling route, 11.8 km is the total length. So you are comparing an increase in distance with a complete route, not two equivalent distance figures.

River and seasonal bathing spots

At the entrance to Rentyny, a cycling route crosses the Giłwa River; a beaver reserve is located by the river. This is a different water feature from the lake on the northern shore: here, the details concern the river crossing at the entrance to the village and the reserve by the river. Rentyny has bathing spots during the season. If you are planning a visit to swim, check the current conditions locally.
