Cerkiewnik: Church and Routes for Your Stay
Accommodation in Cerkiewnik
For a stay in Cerkiewnik, the Church of Saints Catherine and Anne and several cycling and hiking routes offer concrete points of interest. The routes differ in transport mode, length and course: two cycling loops include Cerkiewnik in different ways, while two longer hiking trails pass through the village. You can therefore choose the focus of your stay based on the activity you have planned.
The Church of Saints Catherine and Anne
The church stands on a rise in the centre of Cerkiewnik. It is a Neo-Gothic, east-facing hall church made of red brick, with a rectangular floor plan. Its design draws on forms of Warmia’s medieval architecture. As a hall church, its interior is laid out as one continuous space; “east-facing” describes the building’s orientation towards the east. Together, the brickwork, floor plan and Neo-Gothic style provide specific features for understanding its architecture. Its dedication to Catherine and Anne is also part of the church’s character. Its location on a rise in the village centre is an additional landmark for your visit.
By bike: two different circular routes
The 20 km cycling route runs from Dobre Miasto via Głotowo, Swobodna, Lake Limajno and the Chmury forestry station to Cerkiewnik; it then returns to Dobre Miasto via Swobodna and Knopin. A 17 km route starts in Cerkiewnik, passes through Barkweda, Bukwałd and Różynka, and ends back at its starting point.
The 17 km loop is three kilometres shorter and makes Cerkiewnik both the starting point and the destination. The 20 km ride includes the village on a loop starting in Dobre Miasto. The two routes therefore differ both in length and in where they begin and end. Check the current trail conditions and markings before setting off.
Hiking trails through Cerkiewnik
A 42 km hiking route runs from Olsztyn via Brąswałd, the bridge over the artificial channel of the Łyna, Barkweda and Bukwałd to Cerkiewnik. From there, it continues via Głotowo and Dobre Miasto to Smolajny. The 87 km Copernicus Hiking Trail runs from Olsztyn via Cerkiewnik, Dobre Miasto, Smolajny and Lidzbark Warmiński to Mingajny.
Both hiking trails pass through Cerkiewnik, but differ considerably in their total length and destination. The Copernicus Hiking Trail is a little more than twice as long as the 42 km route and ends in Mingajny rather than Smolajny. When comparing the routes, both their distance and their course are therefore important.
Plan your stay around what interests you
When looking for a hotel in Cerkiewnik, you can base your choice on what you plan to focus on: the church offers a specific architectural point of interest in the village, while the cycling routes differ in their starting and finishing points, and the hiking trails in their length and destination. This gives you an idea of whether you would prefer to combine your stay with a visit to the church, a cycling loop or a longer hike. Check the current markings and conditions of the relevant trail before each outing.
