Święta Lipka is a destination for visitors who want to focus on a pilgrimage sanctuary and Baroque sacred architecture. The sanctuary has been designated a Pomnik Historii (Historic Monument) since 2018 and is considered a Baroque sacred complex of exceptional quality, as well as the oldest centre of Marian worship in northern Poland. You can plan your stay around several specific reasons to visit: the church complex, the pilgrim route, organ performances or the museum.

Pilgrimage Sanctuary and Baroque Complex

The Historic Monument comprises the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the cloisters surrounding it and the monastery. These elements form a complex, while the title of Basilica minor applies to the church: Pope John Paul II conferred this title on it by decree dated 24 February 1983. The designations refer to different levels—the designated sanctuary as a whole and the ecclesiastical title of the individual church.

Pilgrim Route and Rosary Chapels

The Rosary Chapel complex comprises 15 chapels along the pilgrim route from Reszel to Święta Lipka. The niches contain reliefs depicting the Mysteries of the Rosary. The chapels are built of brick and plastered; most have gable roofs, while three have hipped roofs. This makes it possible to see the recurring architectural forms and their differences within the complex. The final stretch of the pilgrim route to Święta Lipka follows an unpaved path through the forest. If you plan to take this route, take the surface into account when planning. The “Gwiaździsta” (Star) pilgrimage leads to Święta Lipka from Reszel, Kętrzyn, Mrągowo, Giżycko and nearby parishes.

Organ Performances and Museum

At the daily presentation, you can hear the sound of the Baroque organ and watch its moving elements. The schedule lists performances on Sundays and public holidays at 10:00, 12:30, 13:30, 15:00 and 16:00; on Saturdays at 10:00, 11:00, 13:00, 14:00 and 15:30; and on weekdays at 10:00, 11:00, 14:00, 15:30 and 17:00. Some times differ for groups of more than 20 people; some performances are available by prior arrangement. Times may change.

The Świętolipskie Museum has seven exhibition rooms with six permanent exhibitions, as well as temporary exhibitions. These include an exhibition on the history of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Święta Lipka. You can also see part of Saint John Paul II’s personal library, with around 1,000 books and albums brought to Święta Lipka from Rome after his death. The seasonal schedule lists daily opening hours of 10:00 to 17:00 from May to September; these details may change.

Summer Music Evenings

The organisers describe the Świętolipskie Music Evenings as an annual music event. Since 1989, they have been held during the summer holidays on Fridays at 20:00 in the basilica; the individual programmes change. For 2027, the organisers announced preparations for the 39th edition. If you would like to plan your stay around a concert, check the dates for your travel period.
