Paprotki lies on Lake Paproteckie and combines this landscape setting with historical and archaeological themes. If you are looking for a hotel in Paprotki, you can consider which focus you want to shape your trip: the lake, memorial sites, or traces of early settlement. Some of the places mentioned are located in Paprotki itself, while other war cemeteries are in the surrounding area.

Paprotki and Lake Paproteckie

Lake Paproteckie covers 28 hectares and is up to 7.2 metres deep. Its area and maximum depth provide two distinct points of reference for the lake. It is therefore a clear geographical landmark; the historical and archaeological sites add another focus to this landscape.

First World War cemeteries

A First World War cemetery with a rectangular, terraced layout lies on a hill near Paprotki. It contains two mass graves with 183 unidentified Russian soldiers, as well as 25 individual German graves with inscriptions. The cemetery is about 300 metres from the Paprotki–Górkło gravel road. There is a small First World War cemetery in the centre of Paprotki. German soldiers who fell in the fighting in the Great Masurian Lakes region in 1914 and 1915 are buried there; individual and mass graves with surviving inscriptions are also present. The two memorial sites differ in their layout and historical context: the hilltop cemetery has several groups of graves, with their numbers specified, while the one in the centre is associated with the German soldiers who fell in the regional fighting.

Archaeological traces and local history

The timeline extends back to the beginning of the Common Era. Paprotki is home to a settlement and a cremation cemetery of the Bogaczewo culture dating from this period. The archaeological settlement, with sites numbered 6, 39, 40, 42, and 43, is entered in the register of monuments and the list of historic monuments. While the cultural designation and dating place the settlement and cremation cemetery in time, the numbers identify the registered sites more precisely.

The school is also part of the village’s history: it was founded in 1734. The school building is considered an example of Masurian architecture. Remains of a watermill have also been preserved in Paprotki. The founding year provides a specific point of reference; the architectural classification applies to the building, while the mill remains represent another aspect of local history.

Other memorial sites in the surrounding area

There are three war cemeteries from 1914 and 1915 in the vicinity of Paprotki. The largest was established about 2.5 kilometres south of the village. Below Paprotki, there are also two old Evangelical cemeteries at a site known as “Kamienny Park.” These sites complement the cemeteries in the centre and on the hill with further memorials in the surrounding area.
