Giżycko, known in German as Lötzen, lies in the heart of the Masurian Lake District. When choosing a hotel for your stay here, you can shape your plans around the town’s different attractions: historic buildings, a stroll along the Łuczański Canal, views of Lake Niegocin, and options for cycling and boat trips. Consider whether culture, outdoor activities or a trip on the water will be the main focus of your journey.

Fortress and architectural history

Boyen Fortress covers about 100 hectares and is shaped like an irregular six-pointed star. It is located on the so-called Wyspa Giżycka. Its size and unusual geometry offer two different ways to explore the fortress: its scale and its star-shaped layout.

The water tower was built in 1900, supplied Giżycko with running water until 1997, and has now been restored. Its construction date, former function and the end of its water supply mark different periods in its history. The tower can therefore be seen both as a former utility structure and in its present restored state.

The Evangelical church on Plac Grunwaldzki dates back to 1827 and hosts organ concerts. Alongside the military and technical buildings, it offers a sacred venue for events. The concerts add a musical dimension to the architectural history.

On foot and by bike

The architecturally notable pedestrian bridge over the Łuczański Canal invites you to take a stroll and is illuminated in the evening. If you also want to explore Giżycko on foot, the bridge provides a landmark by the canal; its lighting is a distinctive part of the evening scene.

Pasaż Portowy comprises a pedestrian bridge and a pier by the water. They lead to a viewing terrace overlooking Lake Niegocin and to the Giżycko pier. This stretch therefore connects several named waterside destinations and makes a useful landmark in its own right, alongside the canal bridge.

Wzgórze św. Brunona has a rest area, barbecue shelters and an observation tower. The hill lies along the 300-kilometre Mazurska Pętla Rowerowa. When planning a cycling trip, both its location on the route and its rest facilities and observation tower are relevant.

Activities and trips on the water

Wiewióra rope park in Giżycko offers ziplines over the forest lake Popówka Mała and obstacle courses for younger and older visitors. The focus is on obstacle courses and ziplines—activities distinct from a walk or bike ride.

Żegluga Mazurska operates a pier in Giżycko. Its offerings include full-day trips and cruises lasting from one to three and a half hours. The different types and durations of trips can help you fit an outing on the water into your day. As schedules may vary, check the details for your planned date.
