Tursko Wielkie-Zagumnie combines a long history with religious and industrial heritage. Tursko Wielkie has been documented since the Middle Ages. A 110-kilometre, green-marked hiking trail passes through the village; the Zamczysko Turskie nature reserve is also nearby. The area offers different points of interest, from history to nature.

History from the Middle Ages to modern times

On 13 February 1241, a battle took place near Tursko Wielkie between Polish knights under Włodzimierz Dunin, the Voivode of Kraków, and Mongol troops under Baidar. It ended in a heavy defeat for the Polish side. Records also document ownership at different times: in 1508, Tursko Wielkie belonged to Paweł Kołaczkowski, and in 1578 to Jan Turski and his descendants. For many centuries, the village also formed part of the Radziwiłł family estates.

Another historical chapter began towards the end of the 16th century. The heirs of the Tarło family founded a small wooden Calvinist congregation of the Lesser Poland Unity in Tursko Wielkie, which was still in existence in 1704. Together with the village’s long history and later records of ownership, this offers a glimpse into different chapters of the area’s past.

Watermill and historic buildings

The Tursko Wielkie watermill is classified as an industrial heritage site and identified as a stationary watermill dating from the 19th century. It was associated with a distillery, brewery, sugar factory, brickyard and oil mill. The mill’s story thus encompasses not only its design, but also its links to several trades.

Other historic buildings vary in their materials, types and dates. Tursko Wielkie has a brick wayside chapel dating from 1866. A wooden wayside chapel dating from 1928 stands on the Szwagrów–Strużki road. A wooden school dates from the 1930s. The Tursko Wielkie 40 farmstead complex includes a wooden barn from the 19th century, dating to around 1890. Religious structures, a school building and a farm complex can all be found here. If you wish to visit particular buildings, it is advisable to check in advance.

Hiking trail and nature reserve

The green-marked Szlak Niepodległościowy passes through Tursko Wielkie and is 110 kilometres long. The Zamczysko Turskie nature reserve lies nearby, between Tursko Wielkie and Tursko Małe. Established in 1979 to protect an old woodland dominated by lime trees, with a mixture of elms, hornbeams and beeches, it covers just under 2.5 hectares. Visible pentagonal fortifications are also part of the site. It is considered a place for nature watching and walks.

The hiking trail and the nature reserve offer different scales: the trail is 110 kilometres long and passes through the village, while the reserve lies between the two villages and covers just under 2.5 hectares. When planning your trip, you can consider the hiking trail and the small-scale natural area as separate points of interest. Before setting out, it is worth checking the current trail markings and conditions.
