Cisów Between Memorial Culture and Mountain Landscapes
Accommodation in Cisów
Memorial Traditions and Landscapes Around Cisów
When choosing a destination for your stay in Cisów, both the town’s memorial traditions and the historic memorial sites and landscape in the surrounding area play a role. The themes range from the insurgents of the January Uprising to partisan units from the Second World War. They also include Włochy, a named summit in the Cisów mountain range. When planning your trip, you can weigh up whether church commemorations, the history of the memorial sites or the landscape are your main priority.
An Annual Mass in Cisów
St. Adalbert’s Church is located in Cisów. Every year, veterans’ groups meet there for a special Mass for the Wybranieccy and other partisan units. The Mass is thus a recurring occasion for remembrance, with a focus that extends beyond a single unit. If you would like to include the service in your travel plans, check the date in advance.
Memorial Sites from Different Historical Periods
In the destination’s surrounding area, a monument commemorates the insurgents of Rębajło’s unit from 1863/64. It was erected in the 1930s at the camp site of the January insurgents, who were under the command of Colonel Karol Kalita Rębajło. General Józef Hauke Bosak also stayed there. In 2023, the insurgents’ cross, which had stood at the site before the Second World War, was re-erected there. The monument and the cross thus refer to different points in time: the uprising, the erection of the monument and the later re-erection of the cross.
Also in the surrounding area, at Kwart, an obelisk commemorates the camp of the AK unit “Wybranieccy,” one of the largest partisan units in the region. Partisans under the command of Marian Sołtysiak Barabasz were stationed there in late 1943 and early 1944. The name Wybranieccy connects this memorial site with the annual Mass held at the church in Cisów. At the same time, the two memorial sites represent different historical periods and different forms of commemoration.
The monument to the insurgents relates to the January Uprising of 1863/64, while the site at Kwart concerns the partisans’ stationing there in late 1943 and early 1944. The dates of construction and re-erection should also be distinguished: the monument was erected in the 1930s, and the cross was re-erected in 2023. This timeline helps ensure that the sites are not conflated into a single historical episode.
Włochy and the Cisów Mountain Range
Włochy is also in the surrounding area. At 429 m, its summit is the highest in the Cisów mountain range and is part of the Crown of the Świętokrzyskie Mountains. It is therefore notable both for its elevation within the range and its regional designation. This landscape feature adds a distinct focus to the historical themes when choosing your destination.
