Wyry: Manor Complex, Memorials and History
Accommodation in Wyry
Wyry offers several historical points of interest for a stay: a manor complex dating from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, stone memorials on Główna Street, an obelisk commemorating those murdered during the Second World War, and a themed trail about the Polish defence in September 1939. The subjects therefore range from earlier architectural history to various aspects of the 20th century. If you also choose a destination based on these interests, you can decide in advance whether to focus on historic buildings, remembrance, or the history covered by the themed trail.
Historic Manor Complex
The manor complex in Wyry dates from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. It comprises residential buildings, farm buildings and a fragment of a wall. These components represent different aspects of the complex: the residential and farm buildings served different purposes, while the fragment of a wall adds another distinct architectural element. Dating the complex to the turn of the century places it in a particular period but does not specify an individual year of construction. If you are interested in historic groups of buildings, the combination of several components offers a specific point of interest. It differs from the separately identified stone memorials on Główna Street.
Stone Memorials and Remembrance
On Główna Street, there is a stone roadside cross dating from 1860 and a stone figure of Saint John of Nepomuk dating from the 19th century. The roadside cross was funded by the Wyry municipality. Another place of remembrance in Wyry is an obelisk commemorating those murdered during the Second World War. The three forms are distinct: the roadside cross, the saint’s figure and the obelisk commemorate different things. The cross has a specific year and the municipality is named as its benefactor; the figure is dated to the 19th century, while the obelisk commemorates those murdered during the Second World War.
Themed Trail on the Events of 1939
A historical themed trail about the Polish defence in September 1939 runs through the main part of Wyry, including along Wagonowa and Leszczynowa Streets. The trail was reported as available in August 2026. In August 2026, the app developed for the themed trail offered location-based additional content and challenges in Polish, English and German. The trail and the app serve different purposes: the route passes through the main part of the village, and the app adds location-based content and tasks. If you would like to take both into account when planning your visit, check before travelling whether the themed trail and app are currently available.
Historic Sites in the Surrounding Area
Nearby Gostyń is home to a historic church dating from 1922, now used as a cemetery chapel. The historic landmark bunker “Sowiniec” is also in the surrounding area. It did not take part in the fighting during the first days of September 1939 and is regarded as a silent witness to the history that unfolded there. The accounts emphasise different aspects: for the church, its construction year and present-day function are part of Gostyń’s character; for the bunker, the focus is on its place in the history of the first days of September and its non-participation in the fighting.
Natural Monument in Wyry Municipality
Within Wyry municipality, near Stary Staw, stands an English oak designated as the municipality’s only natural monument. Its trunk circumference is 550 cm, measured at breast height. This figure refers to the circumference of the trunk at that measuring height, not to the tree’s height.
