Skórcz can be explored from two different perspectives: its medieval town layout and Gothic church shape its historical character, while several hiking routes take in a range of themes and landscapes. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish the routes by length and focus. This lets you decide whether to focus more on architectural history, the history of the region, or forest and lake landscapes.

Cultural history in the town layout and church

The Kościół pw. Wszystkich Świętych is a Gothic church dating from the 14th century. Skórcz’s town layout also has medieval roots: it is listed in the register of monuments and has remained unchanged since the mid-14th century. The church and town layout draw attention to different aspects of the place—a single building and the structure of the town.

Several building phases can be distinguished at the church. The gable between the nave and chancel was built around 1500. Side aisles were added in 1927; the tower, which had been destroyed in 1945, was rebuilt in 1957. Its history therefore spans its Gothic origins, later additions, and the tower’s reconstruction. The furnishings also include late Gothic and Baroque pieces, drawing attention beyond the architecture to the design of the church interior.

Another historical facet lies west of the town layout: there is an area with a settlement from the Early Iron Age, which is under full archaeological protection. Together with the medieval layout and the church, this provides a timeline from an early settlement to the later history of the town and its buildings.

Hiking routes with different focuses

The green PTTK hiking trail “Wzdłuż Jeziora Czarnego” leads from Skórcz to Osiek. It starts at the former Skórcz railway station on ul. Dworcowa. Within the town, it passes the parish cemetery and the Kościół pw. Wszystkich Świętych before continuing along ul. Główna. After leaving Skórcz, it follows forest paths through Bory Tucholskie around Jezioro Czarne. The route thus connects landmarks in town with a forest section beyond it.

A 25-kilometre suburban hiking route also starts and ends in Skórcz. It passes through forests and along numerous large lakes. Stops along the way include the Czarne and Kałębnica foresters’ lodges, the lakes Tuszynek, Słone, and Głuche, as well as Skrzynia, Skorzenno, and Osiek. This route focuses primarily on forest and lake landscapes and a longer distance.

Another hiking route, about 18 kilometres long, starts and ends in Skórcz and passes through Barłożno, the Janka River, Kościelna Jania, Stara Jania, and Mirotki. Its focus is historical: it is primarily intended to introduce visitors to the early settlement of the Jania estates and the life and anti-German Order policy of the knight Jan z Jani.

The two circular routes are easiest to distinguish by length and theme: the 25-kilometre route highlights forests and lakes, while the approximately 18-kilometre route focuses on the history of the Jania estates and Jan z Jani. If you are comparing routes primarily by length, note that the distance given for the shorter route is approximate.
