Prabuty can be explored through two distinct themes: its medieval heritage and birdwatching at Lake Liwieniec. If you are looking for a hotel in Prabuty, these interests can shape your travel plans. The historic sites tell the story of the town’s development and ecclesiastical history; at the edge of the ornithological reserve, observation equipment and information boards take center stage. You can decide whether you would rather explore architectural history or set aside time for nature observation.

Town History: Market Square, Fountain, and City Gate

The market square is one of the oldest parts of Prabuty and dates back to the 14th century. The three-story Roland Fountain stands there; it was brought here from Berlin in 1929. Five lions support the fountain and gave it its current name. Its design brings together elements of ancient, Romanesque, and Gothic architecture. The different forms make the fountain a structure where several stylistic influences can be seen in a single object, rather than focusing on just one period.

Another testament to the town’s history is the Gothic Kwidzyn Gate, also known as Brama Kwidzyńska. It is a surviving section of the town wall, five stories high, and dates from the first half of the 14th century. Its height and five stories set it clearly apart from the three-story Roland Fountain. Both structures belong to Prabuty’s medieval history, but they have different architectural forms and functions: here, a city gate as part of the wall; there, a fountain in the market square.

Churches and Historic Memorial Sites

The Gothic St. Adalbert Co-Cathedral is distinguished by a polygonal presbytery and an asymmetrical, 49-meter-high tower. “Polygonal” describes the presbytery’s many-sided shape. Together with the asymmetrical tower, this creates an architectural design that can be understood through clearly defined forms. When comparing it with the city gate or the fountain, the defining features here are not the number of stories, but the shape of the church space and the tower’s height.

Until the secularization of Prussia in 1525, the Bishops’ Castle in Prabuty was the seat of the Bishops of Pomesania. The Polish Church, Kościół Polski, was built by Bishop Jan I Mnich between 1378 and 1402 as a chapel in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The history of these sites therefore stretches from 14th-century buildings to the period when the castle served as the bishops’ seat.

The Polish Church also houses a small memorial museum. Its collection includes old machines, tools, furniture, coins, militaria, documents, sculptures by local artists, and memorabilia from the plebiscite. The Werner Zebrowski Exhibition Room is located on the upper level of the Kwidzyn Gate; the paintings and prints there depict Prabuty before the war. If you are planning a visit to the museum or exhibition room, check visiting arrangements in advance.

Birdwatching at Lake Liwieniec

Two observation telescopes for adults, children, and people with disabilities have been installed at the edge of the Lake Liwieniec ornithological reserve. There are also information boards with pictures of birds that can be observed there. The equipment and boards offer a different way to engage with nature than the buildings in town: here, the focus is on birds and observing them. If you plan to use the telescopes, check their current condition before your visit.

This gives you a clear distinction to consider when planning your trip: the town’s heritage can be explored through architectural forms, dates, and historic functions; at Lake Liwieniec, the focus is on birdwatching. If you are interested in both, you can treat them as separate themes for your time in Prabuty and look for a hotel in Prabuty as a base for your plans.
