Grabowo Koscierskie: The History of St. Anne’s Church
Accommodation in Grabowo Koscierskie
If you also have a specific cultural and historical interest in mind when choosing a place to stay, Grabowo Koscierskie offers a clear focus in the form of St. Anne’s Church. Its history traces the founding of a chapel, its later elevation to parish church status, and an extension to the building in the 20th century. It also features preserved furnishings from several periods and two dated cemeteries.
From Chapel to Parish Church
The present-day church building traces its origins to the construction of a chapel dedicated to St. Anne, founded in 1631. The Carthusians built the chapel in 1631. In 1701, with the approval of Bishop S. Szembek, it became a parish church. The dates thus mark distinct stages: 1631 refers to the founding and construction of the chapel, while 1701 marks its change to parish church status.
Architecture and Furnishings
The church is a brick building oriented east. Its chancel has a three-sided termination, and the tower stands above the main entrance. In 1952, side aisles were added to the church. Thus, features of the building’s design sit alongside a later-dated alteration: its orientation, chancel termination, and the tower’s position describe the building, while the date 1952 places the extension in context.
The church furnishings dating from the time of its founding included three late Renaissance altars, probably works by Carthusian monks. Late Renaissance and Baroque furnishings have been preserved in the church. The main altar features a painting of the Holy Family from the workshop of Herman Han; the painting is attributed to the school of the Gdańsk painter Hermann Han. A 18th-century sculpture of the Crucifixion has also been preserved. The authorship of the three altars remains a probable attribution, while the painting is identified by both its workshop and its art-historical classification.
