Prokowo combines a landscape shaped by lakes and forests with visible traces of Kashubian architecture. For orientation, consider three perspectives: the valley landscape, the red Kashubian Trail and historic building styles in the village. They show different sides of the destination, from a named natural area to the design of individual houses.

Lakes, Valley and Forest

Prokowo lies beside the two small lakes Prokowski and Lityniec, in a local valley. A continuous, dense forest complex surrounds the valley on three sides; wooded hills and elevations also shape the landscape. Water, the valley and wooded heights are therefore all part of the village’s character.

Another clearly identified natural feature is Lake Jezioro Białe (Lake Białe). In the Natura 2000 area Prokowo PLH220080, it is protected as habitat type 3140: a hard-water lake with underwater meadows of stoneworts (Charetea).

Trails and Local History

The regional PTTK trail guide lists the 139.5-kilometre red Kashubian Trail (Szlak Kaszubski), which passes through Prokowskie Chrósty, now part of Prokowo.

The historic layout of the village offers another perspective. A 2021 municipal heritage conservation description records a partially preserved historic square-and-street layout in part of Prokowo, including a small triangular square to the south.

Prokowo has Kashubian houses with raised knee walls. A 2021 municipal heritage conservation description includes half-timbered houses with clay infill, as well as similarly interesting and well-preserved brick houses with raised knee walls. The knee wall is the low wall beneath the roof slope.

Karthaus: Church and Museum

In Karthaus itself, the Gothic collegiate church in Kartuzy is a cultural attraction in its own right: dating from the 14th century, it is among Pomerania’s most valuable architectural monuments and is unique on a national scale. The church bears witness to the work of the Carthusian Order. Its distinctive features include a Baroque roof shaped like a coffin lid, symbolising the Order’s monastic ideal with the motto “memento mori.” In the wider destination of Karthaus, the Promenada Asesora is a walking and cycling path along Lake Jezioro Karczemne in Kartuzy; it is connected to Ławka Asesora, which serves as a viewpoint over Kartuzy. The Promenada is a popular place for outings among locals and tourists alike.

The Franciszek Treder Kashubian Museum in Kartuzy presents literature, material culture, language, regional history and traditions. Its exhibits are housed in eight exhibition rooms in the main building. The museum also features Bazyli’s Forge, the exhibition “Kaszubska współczesność z korzeni wyrasta” and temporary exhibitions. The collegiate church brings together architectural and religious history, while the museum explores a broad range of Kashubian culture.
