Dolistowo Stare: Church, Windmill and the Biebrza
Accommodation in Dolistowo Stare
Dolistowo Stare brings together architectural history with nature and leisure activities along the Biebrza. For planning your trip, you can choose between two distinct areas of interest: historic buildings and traditions, or the river landscape and wildlife observation. Specific points of interest include a Neoclassical church, a Dutch windmill and the riverbank area. This lets you focus on whichever themes are especially interesting to you during your stay.
Church and Windmill
The Church of St. Lawrence (pw. św. Wawrzyńca) in Dolistowo Stare is one of the earliest Neoclassical buildings in Podlaskie Voivodeship and has been preserved in its original form. It was designed by Jan Zschernig and completed in 1791. A two-storey fieldstone bell tower stands right beside it.
A Dutch windmill from the early 20th century adds another point of cultural and historical interest. It dates from more than a century after the church was completed. The church and windmill therefore represent different building purposes and periods separated by a considerable span of time.
The Tradition of Bocianku
A religious tradition tells of a stone called “Bocianku” in a meadow near Dolistowo. According to the story, the figure of the Virgin Mary appeared there in 1884; three women from Dolistowo are said to have seen her. A wooden cross was erected beside the stone known as “Bocianku.” In 1947, villagers used donations to fund a chapel, where the so-called “miracle stone” was used as an altar.
The chronology includes the church’s completion in 1791, the tradition dated to 1884, and the chapel funded by donations in 1947. These dates represent different kinds of historical reference: a building, a religious story and a donation-funded project.
The Biebrza: Nature and Leisure
The Biebrza riverbank area in Dolistowo Stare is suitable for birdwatching. For travelers interested in birds, the riverbank itself is therefore a specific point of natural interest. The Dolistowo–Jasionowo road runs along the Biebrza from a wooden bridge in Dolistowo Stare. The riverbank area and the route of the road offer different points of interest: birdwatching on the one hand, and the location of a named road along the river on the other.
Dolistowo Stare also has a beach on the banks of the Biebrza, with a recreation and camping area. The “Dolistowo” recreation area is designated on plot 659 in the Dolistowo Stare cadastral district for a maximum of 200 people present at the same time. The stated capacity refers to the number of people who may be present simultaneously at the designated recreation area.
Kayak trips take place in Dolistowo Stare every year. They start at the Masurian Lakes and cover the entire Biebrza River. If you would like to include one of these trips in your travel plans, check the specific dates for the year of your stay.
