Łomża County brings together traces of early fortifications and nature experiences in protected landscapes. It is also home to places of remembrance and a memorial celebration in May. When planning your trip, you can choose a focus: compare archaeological remains, explore cultural monuments, or set aside time for protected areas and birdwatching. If you plan to attend an event, it is worth checking the date for your intended year of travel in advance.

Hillforts on neighboring elevations

At Góra Królowej Bony, clear traces of a large hillfort and the earthworks surrounding it are visible. Nearby Wzgórze Św. Wawrzyńca offers a different perspective: it is home to a hillfort dating approximately to the 9th–10th century, as well as settlement remains and the remains of a church. This date is approximate and refers to this site. The comparison between the two places is therefore specific: at Góra Królowej Bony, the visible traces of the hillfort and earthworks shape the impression; at Wzgórze Św. Wawrzyńca, settlement and church remains, as well as a date range, add to the picture. If you are interested in early fortifications and settlement history, you can consider these different traces separately.

Memorial sites and monuments

A monument to Stach Konwa stands in a forest clearing in Jednaczewski Forest, on the edge of the Rycerski Kierz nature reserve and at the site believed to be his burial place. It was erected in 1922. Since 2022, the Łomża Municipality has organized patriotic commemorations in the clearing around Stach’s, or Stanisław’s, name day on May 8. They are accompanied by the “Kurpiowska Majówka u Stacha” family festival, featuring historical and educational elements. If you would like to include this event in your travel plans, check the date for your intended year.

Puchały also offers specific points of interest for exploring cultural history. Six immovable cultural assets are listed in the register of monuments there: a churchyard, a Roman Catholic cemetery, a brick cemetery chapel dating from the early 20th century, a wooden cemetery chapel dating from the mid-19th century, and two avenues. They are named the Puchały–Milewo Linden Avenue and the Puchały–Milewo Horse Chestnut and Linden Avenue. If the current legal status of the register matters to you, check the entries separately.

Protected areas, trails and birdwatching

The Wielki Dział nature reserve lies near Pniewo. It is part of the largest naturally formed riparian forest complex in the Narew Valley and a permanent refuge for cranes, black storks, lesser spotted eagles, white-tailed eagles, moose, wolves and deer. The presence of individual animals naturally varies, so do not plan sightings as a fixed part of your itinerary. Tourist trails in Łomża Municipality pass through protected areas, including the Łomża Landscape Park of the Narew Valley, offering direct contact with nature. Trail details may change.

A specific birdwatching spot is the observation point in Siemień Nadrzeczny. From there, visitors can watch the many birds that live in the landscape park. Bird presence is seasonal and varies, so the observation point offers a named place for watching birds and a nature experience that may differ depending on when you travel.

Plan trips in the region

Agritourism properties in Łomża Municipality are located in or near the Łomża Landscape Park of the Narew Valley. The landscape and proximity to rivers and forests invite visitors to relax in nature and enjoy walking and cycling. Providers also organize trips to the Kurpie Open-Air Museum in Nowogród, the Museum of Nature in Drozdowo and Biebrza Landscape Park. Individual businesses, services and trip arrangements may change; confirm current offerings before booking or taking part.

These travel ideas offer different perspectives: hillforts and monuments invite you to explore history and remembrance, while trails, riparian forests and the observation point bring the landscape and wildlife watching to the fore. When choosing your hotel, consider which of these themes matter most for your stay and include your planned destinations in your search.
