Wyszków combines a centrally located city park with a Baroque monument and a church with a clearly dated building history. This offers several perspectives to consider when planning your trip: Karola Ferdynanda Wazy Park represents landscape and park history, the Wazów Obelisk commemorates the past, and the Church of St. Giles showcases architecture and monument history. If you are looking for a hotel in Wyszków, these themes can help you decide what you would like to focus on during your stay.

Park and History

Karola Ferdynanda Wazy Park is located in the central part of the city and covers about 10 hectares. Its paths are laid out to give local residents a place to relax while walking in the park. The park’s history also extends beyond its present layout. In the wider Wyszkowski destination, the park was established in the second half of the 19th century as the estate of the Tsarist official Sołowiow, on the grounds of a former manor belonging to the Bishops of Płock.

As early as the second half of the 16th century, a manor house stood in the park, serving as one of the residences of the Bishops of Płock. Karol Ferdynand Waza particularly enjoyed staying there and died there. The 19th-century park and the earlier history of the residence therefore belong to different periods in the area’s history. The wider Wyszkowski destination also lists 19 trees more than 200 years old and of monumental size; two of them are entered in the register of monuments. The park is also home to a Neo-Gothic guardhouse, built in the mid-19th century.

The Obelisk and the Church of St. Giles

The Baroque Wazów Obelisk in Wyszków was erected after 1655 in memory of Karol Ferdynand Waza, Bishop of Płock. In the wider Wyszkowski destination, the obelisk is made of local grey marble. The base bears the royal coat of arms of the House of Vasa, featuring a crowned sheaf of grain; a sphere with a double-barred cross crowns the monument. Its dedication, material and individual components describe different aspects of the same monument.

The brick Church of St. Giles in Wyszków was built in 1793–1795. It is a three-aisled building whose design recalls the classicist Stanisław style and draws on the column structures characteristic of the Palladian type. In 1962, it was recognized as a monument and entered in the register of monuments. In the wider Wyszkowski destination, the Church of St. Giles in Wyszków is open during Mass and by prior arrangement with the parish priest in Wyszków.

The Bug River and Other Perspectives

In the wider Wyszkowski destination, Wyszków lies on both sides of the Bug River. An observation terrace beside the road bridge offers views of the river. The Wyszków salt graduation tower is located in the historic Karola Ferdynanda Wazy city park. At the river-facing edge of the park boulevard, at the foot of the slope, begins the Dolina Dolnego Bugu Natura 2000 Special Protection Area for birds.

The wider Wyszkowski destination also offers the tourist game “Śladami Enigmy w Wyszkowie” (“In the Footsteps of Enigma in Wyszków”). This is a cryptology-themed city game: using a game map, participants visit the marked locations and solve puzzles to decipher a secret message. The game is linked to the history of the Enigma’s decryption and can be played at any time.
