Sierpc
Accommodation in Sierpc
In the valley of the meandering Sierpienica, Sierpc reveals several facets of its history: its oldest historic building, another church with its own story of origins, historic houses and the Muzeum Wsi Mazowieckiej. When planning your stay, you can choose between exploring the town’s history and architecture or visiting the open-air museum.
Building history across the centuries
The Parish Church of Saints Vitus, Modestus and Crescentia is Sierpc’s oldest historic building. Its oldest section probably dates from the first half of the 14th century. The church offers an early glimpse into the town’s architectural history; the date refers to the oldest section and is explicitly approximate.
The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary tells a different story. Construction began in 1483, during an epidemic, at the presumed site of an apparition of Mary to the cleric Andrzej of Sierpc, and was completed in 1488. Together with the monastery, the church forms Sierpc’s largest historic architectural complex. This makes it possible to distinguish chronologically between a building section probably dating from the 14th century and a building with the precise dates of 1483 and 1488.
The Jatki Miejskie take visitors from religious buildings to the history of the town market: built in 1830 in the Neo-Gothic style, they served both as market halls and as butcher stalls. Kasztelanka, a historic wooden house probably built around the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, represents a different type of architecture. The examples differ not only in material and style, but also in how precisely their construction dates can be established: a specific year is given for the Jatki, while Kasztelanka is assigned an approximate period.
Museum visits and event experiences
The Muzeum Etnograficzne was founded on 24 March 1971. The initiative came from folk woodcarvers from Sierpc and the surrounding area, who were looking for a place to meet and exhibit their work. This institution later developed into today’s Muzeum Wsi Mazowieckiej w Sierpcu. The museum’s history thus combines a specific founding date with the aim of providing a place for people to work and present their work together.
Two dated events at the open-air museum illustrate different experiences in 2026. At the Children’s Day event on 7 June, children could play with replicas of traditional rural toys and take part in pottery and weaving workshops. At “Wykopki w Skansenie” on 6 September, traditional potato-harvesting methods were demonstrated. One event focused on participation, the other on a demonstration; both are tied to their respective event dates.
Getting there and choosing where to stay
Sierpc can be reached by public buses, Koleje Mazowieckie trains or by car. The open-air museum is about 4 km from Sierpc railway station; from there, you can continue on foot, by bicycle or by taxi. If you are using public transport, check the connections for your travel dates before setting off.
When choosing a hotel in Sierpc, the focus of your trip may help you decide: are you mainly interested in the churches and historic houses, or is the open-air museum your priority? If you are arriving by train, use the approximate distance from the station as a guide, and check the location of your particular accommodation in relation to the routes you plan to take. This will help you choose where to stay based on the places you want to visit during your trip.
