Habdzin brings together traces of the Vistula’s former courses, a historical connection to its name, and a journey through the Urzecze villages. The landscape, local history, and route offer different ways to approach a trip to Habdzin: from former river formations to a dated event and a journey toward Konstancin. You can decide which perspective to prioritize based on your travel interests.

Traces of the Vistula and the riparian forest

The lakes and oxbow lakes in Habdzin are among the numerous remnants of the Vistula’s former riverbed. Oxbow lakes, or former river channels, recall the course of the Vistula. This landscape feature offers a different perspective on time than a single dated event: it points to former river courses, while a date marks a specific point in time.

Another landscape feature is found at the municipality level: the Łęgi Oborskie Nature Reserve is located in the municipality of Konstancin-Jeziorna and protects an ash-elm riparian forest, a remnant of the Vistula Valley’s natural vegetation. The reserve is also a remnant of the Vistula’s former riverbed. The term “ash-elm riparian forest” brings together two clues: ash and elm name the tree species, while “riparian forest” places the forest in a river landscape. The landscape features thus differ in subject and scale: in Habdzin, the focus is on lakes and oxbow lakes; at the municipal level, it is on the reserve and its forest vegetation.

Chabdzino: a dated local reference

A precise point of reference in time is July 25, 1368. On that day, Prince Siemowit sold Chabdzino, the historical spelling of today’s Habdzin, to Mikołaj from Rozniszew. Chabdzino and Habdzin are the historical and current names of the same place. The combination of the date, place name, and people mentioned makes the event specific. Local history thus adds to the traces in the landscape: while lakes and oxbow lakes indicate former river courses, Chabdzino points to a dated event from the 14th century.

Traveling through the Urzecze villages

The sequence of place names makes it easy to follow the route: from a ferry, the journey continues through the Urzecze villages of Gassy, Czernidła, Łęg, and Habdzin to the center of Konstancin. The distance from the ferry is given as 8 km. Along the way, the chimney and buildings of the former paper mill in Mirków can be seen in the distance. The distance figure answers a different question than the view toward Mirków: it indicates the length of the route, while the chimney and buildings provide a visible landmark along the way.
