Discover Mława: City History and Nature
Accommodation in Mława
Mława is located in the Wzniesienia Mławskie hills on the Seracz River. The E 65 railway line, National Road 7, and Voivodeship Roads 544 and 563 pass through the city. This makes it possible to understand Mława both through its setting in the landscape and through the transport routes that run through it. Here you will find several different themes to help plan your trip: the history of the museum, buildings from different periods, and natural areas. You can decide which of these will shape your stay according to your interests.
Museum and Regional History
The Muzeum Ziemi Zawkrzeńskiej officially opened on December 8, 1929. It has five departments; the areas named include archaeology, history, art, and nature. The history department offers an insight spanning a broad period: its permanent exhibition covers the history of Mława and the Zawkrzeńska region from the 16th century to the end of the Second World War. Its subject matter therefore ranges from the early modern period to more recent history.
The museum’s educational program includes museum lessons and workshops organized by its education department. These activities complement the historical exhibition with a dedicated educational format. If you are particularly interested in the history of the town, the museum’s offerings include both a permanent exhibition and educational activities.
Buildings and Fortifications
Mława has buildings with a range of historical associations. A former prison on what is now Narutowicza Street was built in 1889. The Bank Polski building dates from 1938 and is considered one of the most interesting examples of modernist architecture from the interwar period in northern Masovia. The two buildings thus refer to different periods in the city’s history; the Bank Polski is also a specific example of the architecture of that era.
Fortifications are also among the area’s historical points of interest. The Mławski Tourist Trail passes through Mława and runs alongside original fortifications from the Second World War, including combat bunkers and trenches. On the northern edge of Las Mławski are also the “Krajewo” fortification group, with two bunkers; “Piekiełko,” with four bunkers; and “Dźwierznia Łysa Góra,” with four bunkers. The names and numbers help distinguish the different groups.
Las Mławski and Nature
Las Mławski lies within the Zieluńsko-Rzęgnowski Protected Landscape Area; designated nature trails run through the forest. A distinctive landscape feature is found near Krajewo: a habitat of pine bog woodland lies on an island in a lake in Las Mławski. The protected landscape, designated trails, and this specific habitat each offer a different perspective on the nature around Mława.
The European bison enclosure in Krajewo also has an important educational role. Check the opening days before your visit. This lets you include the attraction in your travel plans without assuming that it will be open.
Cycling Routes in Mława
